Problems With The Steering!!!

Featured Replies

My vRS has developed slight play in the steering when rocking the wheel left and right they is a clonking sound, which feels like something is taking up the slack.... At speed or driving over country lanes it feels looser than it used to....

Also I've noticed an increase in windnoise entering the car around the top of the front drivers door and the rear passenger

door!

and finally which might be connected to the steering play, under braking there is a slight wobble through the wheel, I've heard of problems with Octavia disks warping, but is this right after only 6K miles? As I've used my brakes, ( I've fitted EBC Greenstuff pads to cure the early fade from the standard ) but I allways let them cool off, I never sit still with them on etc etc...

Not good if they are warped already, both Leon Cupra's never suffered from this!

Speaking about nothing I know, but...is it possible these are a touch abrasive and have worn the discs? Suppose it would be easy enough to see this through the alloy wheel...

Rob.

assume warped discs.. mine are going at 4k...

check the ARB bush re the clunk... i have the same clunk and it would appear that may be my prob...

I had an issue with Greenstuff warping discs after approx 5K on my Vectra V6, They were EBC Discs aswell & were replaced by EBC, no questions asked.

Never had any issues with EBC Greenstuff pads on any previous cars...

Also last two Leon Cupra had no warping problems...

There is a first time for everything! :)

Car's going in to the dealers this weekend for a new steering column.. I also enquired over the phone

if the feeling of warped disks is not cured then whats the warranty implications if the front disks need

replacing, he told me that they are not covered!!! which I find very suspect... If I went and bought aftermarket disks ( from Euro Car Parts etc etc ) and they warped then they replace them under a 12 months warranty, aslong as they are not worn out....

6K miles since April ..... and warped disks.. hrm a phone call to Skoda UK I think!!!

Dazz

You are, however, running with non-Skoda brake pads, which won't help your arguement...

Should make no difference, as any replacement must be garanteed for 12 month. I would like Skoda to return them back to the suppliers for them to inspect them for excessive wear or damage.. As brake disks to only last a few months and a few thousand miles before giving up is a nice money spinner for the parts and servicing depts of the dealers...

I expect the disks to last at least the life of the pads...

Talking to the dealer and to those on here who are suffering the

same problem I don't think this is just down to my bad use of the brakes, as I've said before, both my Leon Cupra's ( Same front brakes ), had no indication of warping at 7K miles and 14K miles

done in both!

As some of you with this problem have had the disks replaced under warranty then I will be pushing for the same!

I'd agree the discs should last at least as long as the pads, but if you're running non-OE pads then there's a good chance they will point to these as the cause and refuse it as a warranty job...

And if there's no persuading them, the aftermarket route probably won't cost much different and will yield better results. :)

Out of interest - have the pads worn evenly and equally?

Rob.

Yes pads are wearing evenly, actually there is not much wear on the disks, or the pads at all.

As I've said before I've used EBC greenstuff pads before on a few cars using either OE disks or ATE powerdisks and have had no problems whatsoever...

I've also used Pagid fast road pads on standard disks on my old Passat TDI these lasted 30K miles before I replaced them due to both worn out pads and slight warping of the heavly worn disks..

Both of these pads performed better than the cardboard originals

that seem to through out so much dust, and fade at the first sign of heavy braking....

What aftermarket disks and pads would you recomend?

Haven't a clue, I'm running totally standard. I'm sure Jon or someone would have some ideas though... :)

Picked car up yesterday, steering column done, front discs definitly warped... Warranty will only cover upto 6 months or 6K miles on 'comsumable parts'... Which is worse than any aftermarket supplier

which comes with a 12month G-tee.... I've now contacted Skoda UK and complained,,, as I expect brake discs to last longer than 4 months!!!!!!! If there was cracking on the disc they would have been replaced, ( Which would indicate that I had seriously overheated then!!!! ) Strange....

Service manager agreed with me but his hands are tied with warranty dept... ( Yes he has seen the EBC pads )....

My experience ? Greenstuff are ok on lighter cars but no good on Octavia/Audi A4/Impreza size cars.

I gave up with them on my A4 quattro (useless and noisy) and went to Pagids - stick with them again!

Both the Audi bulletin board and Scoobynetters reached the same conclusion I'm afraid. Don't be tempted to try the Red Stuffs either.

I've never warped discs in 80k on three chipped Audi turbos (if you include the Octavia on same parts) so I'd either know the limitations of the standard kit, or upgrade to something other than EBC.
