Co-axial speaker upgrade

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend any co-axial speakers/tweaters that would fit into the existing speaker wire yet still see a good overall increase, obviously if the tweaters could be kept discreet it would be better, also I assume I will still need the MDF spacer. Next weekends mod if I get good feedback.

Also would you recommend doing just the front or front and rear, and for the rear speakers are they the same dimensions as the front and would I still need the MDF spacer.

Thanks, Chris .

co-axials wont have seperate tweeters, they will be built into the mid speaker.

Rears are different and unless your amping everything up you may aswell leave them alone.

So just some new door speakers would be good and I can leave the existing tweeters (near the door at the top) alone?

I'm just powering it from my DEH 77MP H/U 50w I believe? I also have a cheesy active sub with inbuilt amp so nothing OTT just an increase in sound volume is required as the OEM speakers seem to struggle past 30 volume on the H/U (distortion etc).

Ta.

I just had the front speakers in my 2001 Octy replaced with Infinity Reference 6512is (Co-Axial, with directional tweeter).

You can get away without an MDF spacer. The Autoleads 165mm spacer for the Golf Mk4 fits perfectly, saves cutting and stuff

Tweeters are a pain if you want them to fit in the same space, it can be done, but it is not a simple replace job.

Ok so todays the day im buying some from the internet, I just want some new front speakers which (lets be honest) can go louder than the OEM ones without distorting but still have a nice punch to them, I have opted for co-axials as it seems much easier and should plug straight into the existing wires etc.

One quick question (apologies if it's being asked before), what dimensions are the front speakers and what could you get away with without an MDF spacer? Also roo, are you referring to the Octavia when you were saying the Golf 165mm spacer fits perfectly?

Anyone? my credit card is getting impatient...

Dude,

Do you have a sub in your car? Because if you do, what you can do is get yourself a good pair of coaxial speakers and replace the stock front woofers. You will therefore have more mid-range and highs to compensate for the increased level in bass.

Like I said in the thread before this, I just got myself a pair of F6.5 R Earthquake speakers to replace the stock fronts. Those things have magnets the size of my fists! Very high output power, MUCH higher than the stock speakers, and great frequency response, and they sound fantastic ESPECIALLY if you already have rear speakers and a subwoofer. I've also kept the stock tweeters, so I have two sets of highs running in the front, don't change your stock tweeters, they are absolutely fantastic sounding tweeters...it's only the woofers that should be changed.

So, get yourself Earthquake Focus F6.5R coaxials. They're 200W each, made in USA, , and it comes highly recommended from a sound guy and a sound guy who has them :)

How much and where from, also did you need an MDF spacer or where they a straight switch?

Straight switch. However, I don't live in England. If you go to www.earthquakesound.com you could find a UK dealer.

Good luck.

Sorry to keep banging on but if someone could answer me this question it'd be appreciated, still not decided on them yet even though i've spent most of the day searching the net / old threads.

With a home seperates system if you get an amp which is less powerful than the speakers, the power it needs to drive them usually gives a **** sound, since the DEH 77MP is only 50w per channel, would I be best with speakers which had a max output of say 50/100w just to make sure that the inbuilt amp can power the speakers with no fuss

Yup that's the one....it's the R series of Focus, so F6.5 R.

Is the DEH77 the headunit? Per channel 50W at what impedance? If it's 16 ohms then you can run two 25W speakers (4 ohms) parallel in one channel. If the unit gives of 100W per channel at 4ohms then you can have two 50 watt speakers running in line.

If the output power of the speakers is more than the output power of the headunit/preamp then you will not be using the max potential of the speakers. This is where the use of amps for speakers comes in, a matching amp to match the power of the speakers and therefore use the max potential of your system. Not only that, most amps nowadays come with the 'protect' feature, whereby if it senses it is receiving transients and overdriven signals, it will shut down on its own to prevent you from blowing the speakers.
