More PD VRS struggle to start

Featured Replies

new Bosch S5 battery fitted less then a month ago which replaced the original which worked a treat for my sluggish starting in the mornings, but woke up today and the problem is back, took around 2 mins to start.

the low oil pressure popped up on the Maxi dot and then finally started.

scanned with VCDS and no fault codes

any ideas?

Is your battery charging OK?

Could be a sign of a dodgy alternator or alternator pulley? Are all the connections to the battery clean and greased up?

Here's an extract from the US TDI Club that might be of some help (http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-8.html#b)

Engine is difficult to start, requires a long period of cranking before starting, etc.

- Weak or partially discharged battery. The starter motor must crank the engine at about 300 RPM for the engine to start. If cranking speed is low, have the battery load tested out of the vehicle, and serviced / recharged / replaced as required.

- Corroded electrical connections at the battery terminals, starter motor power wire, ground strap (located near or under the battery on most cars), ground strap at engine block side.

- Weak starter motor. The starter motor must crank the engine at about 300 RPM for the engine to start. If the cranking speed is low, but the battery checks out OK and all battery post and cable terminals are OK , then the starter motor needs to be removed from the vehicle and serviced. The starter motor can be serviced by any reputable auto electric shop; look in your local phone book.

- Air in the fuel system - especially if maintenance has just been performed. Check the clear plastic lines for air bubbles, and see if the bubbles move when you crank the engine. If air bubbles are found, check all fuel hose connections and ensure that the white plastic "T" that fits into the top of the fuel filter is properly seated with the O-rings securely in place.

- Fuel filter clogged or filled with water.

- Incorrect fuel injection timing. Further evidence of incorrect timing include excessive smoke from the exhaust once the engine eventually starts, and reduced power, and higher than normal fuel consumption.

- Faulty or poorly calibrated fuel injectors or injector pump. IF you have VAG-COM, get the engine going, and confirm that the amount of fuel delivery at idle is within specifications.

- Anti-shudder valve problems. If you have an A3 or B4, this isn't the problem, because you don't have one. The anti-shudder valve is located at the entrance to the intake manifold right next to the silver round EGR diaphragm at the right rear of the engine compartment (attached to the engine). To the right of this is a device operated by a linkage facing the rear - this is the anti-shudder valve. Operate the mechanism by hand and make sure it moves freely and is spring-loaded to the open position. If you unclamp and remove the flexible air intake hose located right next to this, you can look inside and readily see whether the "throttle butterfly" is operating as it should.

- Poor quality fuel.

cheers guys, charges fine from what i have measured.

was parked flat on my drive and only ever used Vpower/Nitro Derv.

Other common problems like this have been related to faulty temperature sensor, cam sensor, crank sensor, injectors and loom and starter motor. Are you sure it is charging OK? What happens if you trickle charge overnight and then try - is it still the same?

cheers for the reply, charges fine with the multi meter attached, the battery itself is brand new less then a week old which when fitted started first turn of the key every time only thing different that i did was left the boot slightly open over night (10 hours) which surely on a new battery wouldn't of made much of a difference.hooked up VCDS but no fault codes were logged which was odd.seems i have a small list of things to replace and try and cure it, failing that its getting traded in lol
