Tensioner and Aux belt

Featured Replies

Just called TL Darby in Burton. £121 inc VAT for new tensioner and aux belt. My jaw hit the floor. Obviously the tensioner has got to be a touch over £100...

Anyone know where I can get the tensioner for cheaper. Obviously I want one to OEM standard that's going to last.

What engine is this? A OEM one from TPS in derby is about £50 for a 110bhp TDI. They are more expensive and han other engines as they have a damper.

You might want to establish why you have come to need a new one too - often it is caused by the alternator pulley seizing up. Have a good inspection of this before you sacrifice a new part.

+1 for TPS being able to beat that price.

Good point, that's what happened on my old car. You need a special tool to do the alternator pulley. The pulley is only about £20.

I have always had to have a tensioner, belt and clutch pulley on the alternator on 6 or 7 1.9 TDi's no.... Its worth checking or it will go again.

Ah, don't really know about the petrol engines, not sure if they even have the freewheel pulley on the alternator.

Why are you replacing the tensioner? If its not fooked just leave it on and replace the aux belt.

I'd call a local motor factors.

1.8t don't have freewheel pullys, its just the diesels

I`m replacing the tensioner because there is a chirping, high pitched squeaking sound coming from the pulley area. When the revs rise it almost goes away and when the car is at operating temperature it seems to vanish.

Stick a spanner on tensioner and pull it back then you should be able to feel if bearing on pully are worn or not,

If you are replacing just beware of ones with plastic replacement pullys as i have seen a few with worn bearings shatter, mainly on diesels though as they are put under more stress

Mine squeaks like a bugger under load.

GSF: Tensioner , Belt (premium) Belt (cheaper)

Eurocarparts: Tensioner , Belt

the one thats on my octavia has a plastic idler pully *Gulp*
