Couple of questions

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I've asked a few questions on here fairly recently in an attempt to restore the quality of the ride in my 180,000 mile Superb.

I've now replaced shocks (Sachs), springs, with a much lower mileage set of original springs from a very helpful member here (thanks Russ), front and rear top mounts and rear axel bushes and things are much improved but very small bumps like motorway expansion joints and pitted Tarmac were still rattling the car around a bit.

Decided to change the tyres too in an attempt to get rid of the rattles with some Michelin Primacy 3's all round and wow, even most of the glove box, arm rest and ash tray rattles have gone from the cabin.

I've got a noise from the front nearside corner now, it's probably pointless trying to describe the sound but its a bit of a thunk and crunch when that wheel depresses over a large bump, it's more noticeable now the rest of the car is sorted out.

The local taxi MOT chap has had a good look and my local independent specialist and neither can find any problems but there's definately a different feel to the suspension in that corner.

The tyres that came off the car (Kumho's) had very heavy wear on the inner and outer edge of both front wheels, I'm wondering could it possibly be wheel bearings at fault ? There doesn't seem to be any play in either of the front wheels when jacked up though.

Is it perhaps wise to have wheel bearings changed at this sort of mileage anyway ? I'm wondering about cost for all four wheels ?

Also I've had my DMF and clutch changed about 10,000 miles ago with a Sachs kit and all was well at first but now for the first 20 miles every morning or around an hour it judders quite a lot from a standing start and it seems to be getting worse, obviously it's something the guy who fitted the clutch should look at but I like to go in there at least a little clued up, any ideas guys ?

Many thanks....

Lyndon...

only had my car for 6 months so limited on experience at the moment, hopefully someone else will give you a better response.Just done my front nearside bearing it was quite noisy but still had little play in it so I don't think that is going to be your problem, cant find the receipt but cost was £40 to £50 I think, takes a while to do the job as well 2 hours if I remember rightly

could be worth checking the spring for a crack or excessive compression, also look at the condition of the strut, it may not be an MOT fail but it may be more worn out than the other side

Isn't wear on both inner and outer edges more of a sign of under inflation?

Can you replicate the sound by bouncing the NSF corner while stationary?

Wifey had a new clutch a few years back that went downhill very quickly. Turned out to be out of balance and faulty.  Similar mileage to yours, but was out of warranty by then.  Another new clutch fixed it and it was good for the rest of the car's life.

Hi,i had the same problem as you concerning the rattle and thumping on the offside front wheel but i found out that it was the anti roll bar link that was a little play in it and as soon as i had it changed the rattle and thump was gone.

Thanks for the replies guys, tyres were always inflated to 33 front and 31 rear so I don't think it was that that caused the wear.

I have tried to bounce the front corner to replicate the noise but no luck, it's actually very hard to replicate it at all, it can disappear for a couple of weeks then decide suddenly to do it all day long. Obviously it never wants to do it when my mechanic is about. Same as the clutch problem really it comes and goes, some mornings it's terrible but always it's gone or not present at all by the time I get to the garage.

My car is in the shop tomorrow to investigate a minor oil leak that's been present since the service a month ago and I'm going to ask again about the clutch but with no symptoms present I would expect they're going to be reluctant to do much about it. Bit worried as its about 2 months before it will be out of warranty...

Thanks again for replies...
