Byte 18

Does anyone have any experience with regard to Byte 18?

I know the coding is hidden under 00 and that it is therefore not recommended to play around with it due to it being difficult to reverse any changes.

I want to add LED tail lights to my Superb and understand that Byte 18 will need to be changed to prevent the bulb-error warning.

I can't ask Ross-Tech as I aren't a registered user and all of the US forums focus on VW's.

Surely someone in the UK has the knowledge to program byte 18 for me, for a fee of course?

Assume this is probably a byte within the long coding helper of 09 central electrics. Usually is a tickbox so easily reversable using VCDS.

I'd happily do it, but it would involve you coming on holiday to the Devon coast....

I'm down in Devon next month... in the wifes Octavia, not the Superb

I don't think it is as simple as a tick box?

It is in 09 Central Electronics but byte 18 requires a specific HEX code.

The problem is I can't find what code I need for a Superb twindoor, non-xenon with LED tail lights.

I'm sure Dana at Ross-Tech will know but as I'm relying on a fellow member with VCDS rather than buying my own cable I can't expect them to help me out...

Yes it's a 09 controller coding buy byte 18 is not a tick box, you 'simply' have to put the correct code in.

I do have a couple of codes for the LED rear lights on a Superb.... But they are for halogen headlights (or so my list says) I will dig them out when I am home at the weekend.

Gizmo, I have halogens (SE).

That was going to be my next concern, as the L&K has xenon's I was worried if I found and used the byte 18 code copied from an L&K it might still cause me issues as I don't have xenon's.

If you could find the code for me I would be eternally grateful, you would make me a very happy man!!

(My L&K LED tail lights are currently onboard a slow boat from China).

I thought the long coding helper was just full of tickboxes, but I suppose there are elements to it where there are number ranges. I don't recall actually changing any code within the long coding helper as the idea is the ticking/unticking of boxes is what changes the actual code. I could be wrong of course :D Often am :D

Looks like you need 75 as the code?? ... You may loose the DRL's though? .... Proceed at your own risk mind!

74 - Škoda Superb (SK461) - Halogen / Xenon China - China without DRL SL with BL-function LED SBBR Xenon low beam + Halogen high beam (LED rear lights)

75 - Škoda Superb (SK461) - Halogen / Xenon China - China without DRL / TFL-ABL SL without BL-function LED SBBR Xenon low beam + Halogen high beam (LED rear lights)

Ah just noticed you have halogens and my list was for xenons anyway!

Jason the byte 18 changed on newer cars (09 onwards??)

Ah, gutted, cheers though Gizmo.

There are a couple of 'LED tail light' threads in the Superb forum and the guys report the exact same symptoms - the dash warning dissapears but they also loose the DRL's.

Do you think someone with VCDS would ask Ross-Tech on my behalf?

If not I'll have to go down the resistor route which I'd rather not do, especially if it is simply a case of changing byte 18!

Do you think someone with VCDS would ask Ross-Tech on my behalf?

I doubt it TBH as the 1st thing they ask for is a scan of the car.

Byte 18 is probably hidden due to Ross-Tech's stance on retro fitting xenon's (they are happy to give you the correct code ONLY after you can prove you have fitted the whole kit as they leave the factory - self levellers, washers etc)

I should be able to get a scan of the car if required by a local member with VCDS.

Another member has kindly agreed to at least ask RT the question.

I didn't realise it was Ross-Tech that have hidden byte 18, I thought it was Skoda.

I might send off an email to Skoda CZ to ask if it is possible for my local dealer to make the change!

It isn't Ross-Tech who is hiding information, Skoda just isn't publishing anything anymore. We're adding information as soon as we've confirmed it on a regular basis. Any customer who has a specific need can always contact us for assistance, just because it's not in VCDS (yet) doesn't mean we don't have a possible solution. ;)

Hi Sebastian,

The tail lights arrived and were promptly fitted. As expected they immediately threw the bulb-error warning light.

I very kind member of Briskoda scanned my car for me last night. Listed below is what I have.

You'll see that both the brake lights and side lights (LED functions) are appearing as faults.

If you could help me to understand which element of Byte 18 I need to change and what to change it to so clear the bulb-error that would be fantastic!

How can you tell....is it because it is version 11.11.3?

I have a genuine VCDS cable and I think I'm running version 11.11.6 of VCDS, but I have updates set to manual and I suppose if I hadn't updated for a while I could be running an older version.

Unfortunately I cannot help you silver1011 as I'm at the other end of the country.

An old version is often a giveway, though a legit customer with an old version will always get assistance yet we will also ask to update. In some cases (for example known issues/bugs) we may ask to update prior to going any further. It does depend on the circumstances after all. As far as determining a legit version there are other clues which we can check and in this case I can say with 100% certainty that this was done with a fake interface.

I did wonder if you could tell from looking at some of the other parameters.

That being the case, presumably the owner of this cable (assuming they know it is a copy) should have really told the OP this before plugging it into their car. You hear stories of these copied cables destroying modules on cars etc.

Reality is that we have seen a lot of things in combination with these fakes. From altered software to stuff which they modify on your windows machine making it hardly usable after and even modifying other devices attached to that machine as far as making a different 15000 USD tool which was attached at the time into an expensive paper weight. Then people blame us for this, though in the end it turns out - they did use a fake copy and not an actual VCDS. Never seen a case like that in combination with one of our genuine systems. After all there is a reason for the price difference. No develoment costs, cheaper materials (sometimes even fake electronic components themselves) and not to forget labor/production costs.

FWIW, we do see a lot of people who claim somebody else scanned their car while they actually own the clone/fake and know exactly what they got their - still trying to fool us (and/or others). In the end for me/us this is a waste of time, I'd rather help those who respect what we do and the effort we put into this product.

Easy, that sounds like a completely unjustified accusation.

Nobody accused you, if I wanted to do that I would have done so and there would be no doubt about it. ;) Fact is, we have no means to check who actually did what - we only see the results and act accordingly. In this case we saw  that you wanted help in combination with a pirated product of ours. End of story,
