Up shift flappy paddle intermittent

Featured Replies

Bought Hofmiester's 2010 Octavia VRS back in April. He had problems with the MFSW while under warranty a few months earlier, and had the clock spring replaced which seemed to cure his problem.

Twice over the last couple of weeks the up shift flappy paddle has packed in. No amount of waggling or moving will stir it in to action. On each occasion it has returned to normal the following day.

I can shift down with the other flappy, and I can shift up and down with the gear stick. All other MFSW controls seem to be fine.

Is it likely to be the actual switch - do they fail? Or is it more likely to be the clock spring again? If it's the latter, is the warranty on a warranty repair transferable to a new owner? Bare in mind I live nowhere near the original dealer :(

cheers

Dave

Slip ring on the steering column may be faulty or the microswitch in the wheel itself may have given out?

Hi Dave,

I have the exact same problem, although I drive a 2012 Elegance TDI. I have a used control module though, so I may try and swap it out with another one to see if it is the module or the paddles themselves.

Will keep the thread updated.

Replacement parts fitted under the terms of the vehicle warranty are normally only warranted for the remaining period of the vehicle warranty.

I have added the words 'normally only' to the standard warranty wording above because some members have been given new warranties on replacement engines.

I had this exact problem on my 2910 vrs. Australian model. There was a recent recall done through my service centre that addressed this problem. Everything done in a few hrs and now working 100%

Are you from the future?

I think I may have put my clock back a bit too far last night!

Hi guys,

I scanned my car and it showed an intermittent fault code with the up shifter paddle under the Steering Wheel module.

I removed the airbag, and the white connecting wires that attach the paddles to the steering and re seated all the wires. Re-fit the airbag, cleared the errors and checked under VCDS to see if both paddles were "Activated".

The paddles have been working properly again ever since.

I will post the VCDS screenshot as soon as I figure out how to upload images on here.

Do you know what the recall involved? Parts replaced?

Link to the VCDS error. As mentioned ^ it has been fixed by re-seating the wires.

Thanks for the info - gives me something to check :)
