Too powerful???

Featured Replies

Well guys,

In about a weeks time, I will have a brand new Earthquake subwoofer in my car, which will be driven by an Earthquake amp with the signal source being the stock head unit. I already currently have two rear Earthquake coaxial speakers, along with the stock speakers in the front. Because the acoustics in the Fabia are fantastic, I'm already getting quite a lot of bass & sub-bass from the rear.

Adding the sub will just complete it for me, and the music will really be felt. I'm not looking to do a drive-by with a look over a shoulder and have the bass pumping out for everyone to hear, I simply want a complete system.

My question here is, do you guys think an 800W PMPO (400W RMS) is a bit too much, especially for a small car like the Fabia?

You can never have too much bass - trust me :D

400w RMS - in total? Will be fine.

I'll be running over 1000w RMS once mine is all back in and running again... Although I doubt it will ever actually use all that juice. More likely to just cruise at about half that for most of my music listening

no worries that!

i got a pair of 600W RMS DVC subs in my octavia. they do, just about ;)

Ok good.

Because hell...400W RMS is pretty powerful for a small car...600WRMS? 1200WRMS? You guys are nuts!

Nah, I think they're deaf and need to feel the music :D

You'll be using a minute amount of that power, most of the time. All it gives you is the ability to have loads of 'clean' base, unlike the standard setup which would run out of steam a fair bit sooner, and could never push out the lower notes with that kind of air-throbbing :naughty: push

eh!! what??!!!

speak up for gods sake!

Eh? :D

Taka taka taka...I can't hear anything man....taka taka taka....a Fabia vRS you say?...takataka taka....

:D

You can never have enough power, once I've finished with my install I'll have 125 wRMS per side for the fronts and have just under 800 wRMS into my sub and that's just about enough. More power means more headroom and headroom is good just control yourself with the gains on your amp don't wanna damage your sub.

Got something on my new sub I've never had befire - a remote subwoofer power knob type thing. Looks like there's enough wiring to be able to sellotape it down next to my handbrake and be able to twiddle as desired.

It's normally supplied with amps not subs but will work similar like a remote gain on an amp. Don't over do it though you don't want to damage your sub ;)

I think you guys are talking about your figures PEAK, not RMS. Those figures for RMS are a little way too powerful sounding for me. 125W RMS front speakers will blow your doors off and deafen you within a short period of time if you play it loud constantly. An 800W RMS sub will crack your windscreen and rear window. 800W Peak is a more realistic figure.

Anyone want to explain RMS and peak to a total ludite?

Ta :D

ludite?

RMS = basically constant running power, and peak means.... maximum reachable, but not sustainable for longer periods of time.

:P

That's what I thought ;)

So are you guys quoting peak or RMS (I know you all wrote RMS) :D

I'm not talking peak figures these are all RMS as if I was talking peak those would be doubled if not a bit more. I've been putting my kit together for 3 years now and have been through 3 previous cars doing so to get to something I'm happy with. 125w RMS won't blow my doors off and that was in my last mk1 clio, so should be better in my well built furby ;)

As for cracking the windscreen I think you'd need a lot more power to manage that. My 800w RMS is nothing compared to some cars I've sat in running in to the 1000's. If you don't believe me you should take one look at some of the people on talkaudio.co.uk there are some crazy people there. Anyway as I was saying my kit is sufficient for my needs and I'm yet to go deaf so can't be a bad for me. I listen to music at conservative levels don't like to over do it all the time.

RMS stands for root/mean/square. The amount of continuous power that is measured in watts that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds. When you go lookin' for an amp, always pay attention to the RMS rating on the amp.

Car audio and Hi-Fi manufacturers usually only display peak power ratings on the packaging of their products. The peak power rating tells you the maximum wattage an amplifier can deliver as a brief burst during a musical peak, like say a crazy and intense kick drum. The RMS figure is more significant though, always. That's why when I went to ask about it, the salesman was telling me the 800W PEAK sub he was offering is very powerful, I told him '...maybe for car audio, but 400W RMS is really not much for a sub woofer...'.

Ah, so my itty bitty 1000w RMS amp is OK for a 13" sub? and the 600w RMS one would be ok for my Focal components?

Bit new to all this "stuff"

Yes it is okay, but it won't work like an 18"...you won't get those sub-hertz because bass is moving air really. And a 13" sub isn't a s flexible as a 15" or 18".

But a 12 or 13" sub is a good compromise for all types of music, the worst thing is to have an 15" or 18" and when you want to listen to fast paced music the bass can't keep up. Which 13" sub is it can I ask, if it's the JL13W6 or 13W7 then they are lovely subs. As far as the focal components and 600w amp goes if it's anything between 100w - 200w RMs x2 you should be fine just don't over do the gains otherwise you'll be smelling burnt speakers.

my two subs are 300W RMS each, 1800W peak in total :)

300W sounds decent for a car. And in the Fabia, it's more than decent. I don't know what they would sound like in an Octi though.
