In-Car Wi-Fi

Featured Replies

Has anyone done this?  I've been wanting to do it for ages but don't really know where to start.

Just had a look at a place in Manchester, and they are quoting £900 all in (box, antenna's fitted)

Thinking it's a little pricey or is that the going rate?

Anyone shed some light please?

It's basically something like this, that creates a WiFi hotspot. http://store.three.co.uk/view/product/ql_catalog/threecatdevice/2432;jsessionid=51EE363BCBA95105A44559D6E0DA11A3?crossSellParent=2293

What do you want to use in car WiFi for?

Most phones can also do tethering which is the same thing.

I guess the main advantage of having everything installed is a roof mounted aerial which would give a better connection than the tiny aerials built into a phone.

Buy 3G tablet for £150 with £10 pay go sim, put in glovebox, job done.

Use MiFi modem - job done - and it's "Transferable between vehicles" - and your pocket!

Al.

Does the £900 job accept multiple SIM cards and therefore take the best signal from multiple mobile networks? If not then it is a major rip-off.

£900 for mobile wi-Fi is a rip off.

I get free tethering on my phone, so can surf on my tablet using my mobile phones data connection for FREE up to 1.5Gb

I don't surf while driving though. ;)

As said MiFi is probably the best option plenty around now.

I use iPhone as a wifi hot point. Works a treat if you have unlimited data package if not a you probably get robbed for data charges from some swine on the motorway driving behind tapping your connection lol.

Mifi., although the internal antenna isnt that strong.

This is something I intend to do to my car, I have a Mifi unit and I have a new tablet I am using as a SATNAV, since the tablet doesnt have 3G I can use the Mifi unit as a tether.

I may open up the Mifi unit and see if I can attach an external antenna though.

Buying a cheap tablet and PAYG sim is no go. I want my car to have/be a wi-fi hotspot.

Phone wifi hotspot not do the job? Use mine all the time.

Up until end of the month ive had a crappy little nokia as my phones always get smashed.

Looking at those mi-fi's though they seem pretty good.

Going price on one of those?

Just phoned 3 and the contact on them isn't too bad imo.

Contract

1GB - 24mnth - £10.87

15GB - 24mnth - £18.99  <--this is the one I'm leaning towards.

PAYG

1GB - £49.99

3GB - £59.99

12GB £109.99

Will let you know how I get on, might pop to 3 on Friday and see what's what.

There are a number of Mifi and other Huawai units around that are un;locked to any network - I unlocked mine (for free), after the trouble "Three" gave me over using it for its intended purpose.

I just use my iPhone. I'm on 3 and have unlimited data (most i have caned in one month so far is 27gb but i was tethering my laptop whilst away from home. I never paid anymore than the £36 for the one plan contract.

I also have one of the 42Mbps MIFI's that is unlocked so will accept any sim. Not found a network as reliable (i'm not in a big city) as 3. At my home with 3bars on my iPhone i get 17mbps download on "3" 3G. Same on the Mifi.

To put that into perspective my BT Shyte at home is only 1.8mbps!!

Your better off using your phone as a mobile WiFi with this deal......

http://store.three.co.uk/view/searchSimOnly?tariff=3034

Includes all you can eat data with no limits, simple and very effective for a bargain £15 per month, usually £25 p/month.

I have the One plan and use it daily for mobile WiFi on my tablet and sat nav. Streaming movies off Netflix is flawless.............

Coincidentally was just looking, £45 for a little Huawai unit. Plus your sim and contract.

If you already have a contract with 3 they sometimes discount the price of the Mifi.

Ref the price of the contracts, I get 15Gb a month for around £9.50 with 3.

Just say, for starters,  your happy to have whatever the Street View vehicles had.
