CR170 - 'tinkling' noise

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Superb CR170 - 12000 happy miles so far but have become aware of a slightly unusual 'tinkling' type noise occuring when cruising on a lightly loaded engine (hesitate to use the word throttle!).

It sounds faintly tappety or like the 'pinking' noise you'd get on a poorly adjusted petrol engine.

It's not loud or particulary distracting but haven't had this noise on any other diesels I've had.

Maybe a VAG CR trait.....maybe not.

Wondered if anyone else has this noise and whether I should be concerned or not? Car performs ok otherwise and gives expected mpg..

Thanks all....

Hi HaggettG,

Have you checked whether this is the air conditioning system? I had a similar noise when the engine was lightly loaded and/or on tickover and found it disappeared when I switched off the aircon. Regassing the aircon (at a similar milleage as yours) eradicated the problem. Just a thought.

Cheers

Diesels do knock, I doubt you have a problem but if it worries you take it into Skoda.

Thanks chaps.

aircon is usually off but I'll check out if it changes when switched on.

It's not a worry as such, just one of hose things I like to understand....

If it's what I think it is it can be exhaust resonation you are hearing due to the exhaust not being coked up enough yet.

I have this noise, which gets louder the longer the journey; it is definitely connected to the aircon, as it vanishes when the aircon is turned on. What was the outcome, D.H ?

Morning, my 62 plate L&K is going into the dealers with the same problem this morning. They regased it two months ago and that did sort the problem out but it is back again. Will let you know how I get on.
