laptop memory upgrade

Featured Replies

im wanting to upgrade the ram in my laptop currently its got 2gb ddr2 sodimm and it can take 4gb but only has one ram slot. but ive looked online and found single module 4gb ram but its starting at over £60 up to around £100. i was looking to spend no more than £30 any more than that and im not going to bother would anyone know anywhere i can get second hand parts that would fit or even new for under £30.

If on Windows, you'll need 64bit to make full use of the 4Gb. 32bit O/S will only see and use 3.5Gb AFAIK

That really depends on the GFX; if it has a seperate GFX card (not likely), it will see 4Gb MINUS the amount of RAM on the card (so it sees a total of 4GB).

check the MOBO's specs, maybe it can handle DDR3, I dunno, just a thought.

Are the notches for correct fitting not in diffrent places between the two

DDR3 and DDR2 are not compatible, the pins are totally different and the speed ratings also.

DDR2 is now obsolete, as I have also been trying to get some ram for my HP Mediasmart Server. I need a single 4GB standard DIMM and in the last 6 months has gone from £50 to almost £90 because supplies are drying up.

If you really want to upgrade then you may have to stump up the current price now because the only way is up.

You can use the Crucial Memory advisor tool to find out which memory is compatible with your laptop (on the left).

You don't need to buy from them to find out what fits. Crucial stuff is fine if you do pick it but usually you can get something cheaper from EBuyer etc.

Ill try that tonight when i get home to make sure the ram is what i think it is. Ive never really done much with ram before but does it matter or do damage to the laptop if i have i think 667mhz 2gb module and i put in a 4gb which is 800mhz or are all ddr2 modules interchangable regardless of spec. Ive found a 4gb one on ebay for £40

If you run 800 on a 667 system it will clock back down so fine, obviously 667 can't crank up to 800 though.

Ah thats how i thought it would be just had to make sure dont want to fry the motherboard or similar.

It would only run a reduced performance anyhoo !!
