Turbo - Recon or New ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've currently got the police siren issue with my turbo and I'm also leaking oil (started after the siren issue), the car has been going into limp mode on and off for just over a year now. I've got a garage taking a look at the car next week to check the turbo, if I need it replaced, what would be the best option, new or recon.

I've looked at Turbo Technics, they can supply a recon exchange turbo for around £400 with a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty. Turbo Dynamics can supply a new turbo for around £930 with a 1 year warranty, not sure about the mileage.

Any suggestions are welcome

Also, Turbo Dymanics quote the following:

'Honeywell Turbo Technologies introduced a Non-Repair Policy for their Garrett VNT turbochargers in 2004. No genuine spare part components are available for these units and no calibration information issued. This was due to the intricacies of the modern VNT turbocharger and the precise calibration required to make them compatible with the engine's ECU. The latest rotating electronic actuator (REA) units are fitted with an Eprom chip that is flashed on the production line uniquely for every turbocharger unit and therefore are not a part that can be simply replaced or swapped.'

So would that mean a recon turbo would possibly be an issue ?

Personally I would go for the Turbo Technics recon unit in preference to a new one, even if it cost more. The fact that it costs less than half the price of a new one makes the recon unit even more atttactive!

The turbo on the BKD engine doesn't use an electronic actuator so i don't think that statement has any relevance to this. Even VAG/Skoda main dealers fit recon turbos to these engines.

Thanks for comments Nick, much appreciated

I should have explained before, but part of the reason I'd go for the Turbo Technics one is because they modify the design very slightly so it shouldn't fail again. It does appear to work too, judging by posts on here from people who have the TT recon turbo fitted. The longer warranty is also a bonus.

Yeah I totally agree, I did a trawl of TT posts on the forum before posting my question and to be honest I was 100% for a TT recon unit until I read one thread where a guy had trouble with a TT turbo and TT claimed an overspin issue and offered a repalcement at discount to him. But, you will always get a few failures within the masses of good ones. Many thanks Nick

Midland turbo, £310 + VAT inc shipping and collection of your old one, no surcharge on the old unit, 2 year warranty. Same deal as a TT with better than OEM internals. Fitted mine yesterday (or the garage did) and can't rate them highly enough. They supply a full gasket set with the turbo, so all you need extra are the oil feed and return pipes, oil, oil filter and sump plug. I ordered at 5pm on a Tuesday, it was delivered 9am Thursday.

Picked up a s/hand one for a VRS for £150, another option but make sure it comes with the manifold as they are I believe matched

Well decided to bite the bullet today, ordered an exchange turbo from TT (£448 + £90 surcharge), contacted Nick Young's garage and they will fit the turbo next Wednesday for me. Hopefully that should sort me out for at least another 130K miles

Copied from my other thread:

Right update time, my car has been into Nick Young's at Wrotham today, they have changed the turbo and the oil feed pipe. The guy's also found that my fuel cooler was leaking, funnily enough I've been smelling diesel everytime I get out of the car for months so, this has also been changed. The car drives great, no more police siren or limp modes  . They're a top bunch of guy's and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone wanting any work carried out on their car, many thanks guys

Now the only thing that's pee'd me off is that Sherlodge garage had not long carried out a service and only three weeks ago MOT'd the car. Perhaps I'm wrong here but, I would have thought they'd have seen the leak as there was a trail of diesel on the underside from the cooler to the back of the car ! :o  Think the next service will be done at Nick's garage.

Great result, as always once you find someone you trust stick with them
