Scraping noise from n/s brakes

Featured Replies

Hi,

Was hoping someone could help out with this one.

I decided to do a road trip around Scotland this week and today I ended up in Durness. As I entered the village and turned off the radio I noticed a scrapping noise from the n/s wheel. I managed to find the local garage guy and after a test drive with him he suspected a stone chip stuck around the calipers somewhere. He took the wheel off and unclipped the brakes to check between the pad and disc, but nothing. I think he then sprayed some wd40 or something similar around the caliper. After putting the wheel back on I drove off but to my surprise the brake pedal went to the floor, but by press 2 or 3 the pressures came back. Is this possibly some auto adjustment or possibly the wd40 on the brakes. I suspected this was normal as brakes appeared fine for the next mile or two until the scraping noise returned. I headed back to see the garage guy but I think he'd finished for the day.

After a few miles of driving I heard the sound of something freeing itself, like a stone in the wheel arch. Then after that I've had no problems, took out for a further 10 mile drive, still no problems. Still not sure about the whole losing brakes thing tho. Well see what garage guy says about it tomorrow. I still feel I need to pay him for his labour though, although I think he'll settle for a wee dram or pack of baccy.

Anyway in a nutshell is the loss of brakes normal after unclipping them?

Did he wind the piston back in at all? Brake pedal usually goes a bit soft for a few presses if that's the case...

Sounds normal to me - he probably had to push the piston back in a bit to get the pads clear of the disc when refitting. Nothing to worry about.
