Hybrid Turbos?

Featured Replies

Looking into the prospect of a Hybrid Turbo on the Furby vrs, just wondering what are the current prices on these? and who do them? if anyone has any idea's cheers!

I heard on the grapevine that one of our regulars knows a bit about his - I'm sure he'll answer as soon as he sees this (that is of course if the rumors are true ;))

Whats a hybrid turbo?

Well, I know of a rumour about a Devonian who's fitting a hybrid turbo to his PD130 engine, which might be nice once he gets it running. ;)

He also wishes he'd had a camera yesterday as he had both OEM and hybrid turbo sat on the floor of the workshop and could see the differences. Much bigger compressor area, and generally a lot more beefy.

This is all of course just circumstancial rumours though... from what I've heard. ;) Oh, and the figure of

Oh, and the figure of

A hybrid turbocharger combines the quick boost response required at low engine revs, with the extra air-flow capacity needed for more power at higher revs

And will cope nicely with the 1.8bar boost needed to almost max-out the injectors for circa 210bhp

(the safe max for a std turbo is 1.55, most remaps use 1.4) ;)

but i wouldnt know what one looked like either *cough* :D

standard max is 1.55 opps I'm sure mines boosted to 1.6 bar

Will be interesting to see how mine boosts compared to other brands. ;) Should think they're all much of a muchness though. I think the **** word is "PHAT" ?

edit: Is C H A V still a banned word?

lol...

Turbo whistle rocks.. i really should record it one day

chhhaaavvvvv pssssttt

I think mine goes up to 1.8bar ;)

From the outside, mine is totally standard, the hybrid just has different internal bits. I think the impeller is uprated and the flows are reworked to allow higher boost

Defo need an FMIC though in this heat to actually benefit from it. The higher boost gives higher temps and without any of the pikey mods, does hinder the improvement somewhat.

Mine was definately more willing this morning with the lower outside temperature.

I'm pretty sure mine whistles a bit louder too :D Just watching the Brunters DVD and dare I say the engine sounds rather juicy - although that could be more the milltek than the turbo / pd160 air intake :)

ohhhhh get it stu it will be ace!

Well, mine LOOKS totally different too - kind of the same "shape" with the gasket area being the same, but the body & pipework all looks a lot chunkier & shiny. ;)

I'm getting a little pressie from Allard with the FMIC so looking forward to knowing how high it will boost. ;)

IIRC i think allard use a vnt17 hotwheel and a vnt 20 compressor.

not sure what the specs of the Star perf/AMD one is.

Back to the original question... i really wouldnt consider a hybrid until youve sorted out the other areas of the car... brakes are a must.. suspension.. cupra intake.. and a decent hiflow zorst.. a FMIC is highly reccomended too, or you may find out you have less power than just remap in weather liek this :(

VNT20? wossat? :D Sounds BIG. ;) Anyone got a piccie so I can be sure? I remember seeing a nice Garrett label on the controller.

The VNT 20 is what is used on the V6 tdi.

 :D Sounds impressive anyway.

Wish I'd got a piccie now. :(

Best bit was taking it to bits and turning the compressor part of it through 180 degrees to make it point the right way for the FMIC pipework. ;)

i would say if youve got the money go for the star performance kit ;)

Don't suppose they speeled off the stats on it in conversation up at Knockhill, or wherever it was? ;)

ok what does speeled mean

spilled the beans

given you the "speel" - sorry, might be a bit of a colloquial term. :o

Like Mike said basically. I doubt they let slip actually as they didn't allow photo's of how the CAI worked with the OEM air intake route, to help me fit mine. :)

well the bonnet was up most of the day at the trackday just didnt take pics although there was alot of what look like heat reflective stuff at the rear of the engine bay.

Hmmmm. Wonder how hot a hybrid really gets? I'm a little worried now as I remember that video of the Golf going up in smoke/flames... Wonder what really needs protecting from the heat though? From memory there's little flammable down by the turbo, apart from the oil it might spill out in the event of a failure?

Well, I know of other hybrid running cars, so I don't think exces sturbo heat is really much of an issue,

Very bling I reckon.
