DMF under warranty - should I replace the clutch too?

I bought a 2007 Scout (2.0TDI PD) from Bickerton Skoda back in January this year. Lots and lots of issues (I won't bore you with the details...). The main issues are the DMF needs replacing and the tailgate needs replacing due to corrosion. Thankfully Skoda approved used warranty and 12year anti-corrosion warranty are sorting both.

My question is - whilst they are replacing the DMF under warranty should I replace the clutch? The car has done 60k miles and shows no signs of the clutch being dodgy.

Bickerton Skoda have quoted £385 for the clutch parts (labour will be done under warranty for the DMF).

I've searched around and I can get a new clutch fitted as a standalone job for £310 (Mr Clutch)

Any advice?

Should I pay the extra and get the clutch done at the same time by the man dealer or save £60 and get it done later?

Is this a false economy?

Would make sense to use OM parts fitted by the dealer just in case you have any further problems. If mr clutch does it and things go wrong you'll be in a sticky position trying to prove who's to blame. As Mike says probably not a good idea to fit a new dmf to an old clutch

All ways replace if the box is out,and as above for the sake of £75 I would go with the OE clutch.

You're right - trouble is don't really want to give them any more of my money... Been messed around a lot by the dealer!

You don't have to have the warranty work done at Bickertons.

 

I can only echo what has been said above, I'd pay £75 for Skoda to replace the clutch over Mr Clutch any day of the week.

 

I have a 2008 Scout, what other issues have you had?

Id ring a few skoda dealers parts dept & get a quote to buy a clutch kit (ask for a bit of discount) & if its less than £385 buy it & supply it to the dealer to fit when they change the flywheel,i suspect £385 is the full retail price,im sure a decent motor factor could supply a clutch for alot less than £385.

Anything fitted by Skoda would have a two year warranty - worth the extra.

I obviously went against the tide!

 

As part of my turbo and DMF woes I was asked about replacing the clutch as it was half worn.

Well at 5 years and 122k miles now that means it'll be done in 2018 or at 240k miles. All assuming it doesn't end up being our 'second' car before then and do much reduced annual mileage.

 

Given the cash I was spending at the time I was more than happy to defer the expense!

 

Car drives beautifully now BTW. Still love it!

Get it done, I had mine changed at 40k~

Challenge the price though, I didn't pay much over £200. I challenged based on Europarts prices and they quickly adjusted theirs. You could always supply the parts but loose the warranty.

I've asked a few parts departments for a price - as suggested if I can get I cheaper I'll buy it and then give it to them to fit. I've seen clutch kits on eurocarparts and gsf for around £200. Just a bit nervous about buying the wrong one!

Anyone know which kit I need to buy?

After some negotiations with the dealer, they have now quoted £188 for the parts. I'm getting them to fit at this price.

Bit of a change from the £385 quoted last week!!!

Do they rely on people not questioning them to make their money??!!

£385 including parts and labour!

To add insult to injury - had to fork out £390 to get the cambelt and water pump replaced yesterday...

My question is - the car was an approved used vehicle purchased from a main dealer, it's been maintained since new by main Skoda dealers (in Scotland) but all the records (and visual inspection) indicated that the cambelt had not been replaced.

To confirm - i checked the Skoda database (via main dealer against both the reg and chassis number) and also had a free safety check done by my local Halfords Autocentre (manager used to be a Skoda Master Technician).

Based on Skoda recommendations - cambelt is due at 4 years or 80k miles. This means the cambelt should've been done November 2011 based on age (car registered 11/2007).

Obviously I paid the £390 as that was considerably cheaper than a new engine if the belt snapped!

Do I have any come-back on Skoda UK or the dealer for this?

I don't normally complain or moan but I've owned plenty of cars (of all different makes) in the past and I can't help but feel I've been sold a bit of a lemon...

the £385 was just for parts (not labour) - I have the email to prove it.

Apologies - started a new thread on this.

FWIW on the clutch, skoda do a DMF and clutch kit, which is discounted compared to buying the DMF and the clutch as separate items.

 

I asked the dealer to use this kit and skoda agreed to me paying only the difference between the Full DMF/Clutch kit and the Full price of the DMF. I think it basically meant the clutch was about £120 and since the box was off anyway, there was no additional labour.

 

I'd say if you've hit 60k and had DMF issues, then replacing it is a no brainer for sub £200 if you've got the money.

Make sure they do the hydraulic release in the gearbox end too and that they are also changing the bearings and plates.
