Memory Seat problem (2008 L&K)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My 2008 L&K has developed a problem whereby the driver's electrically adjustable seat moves on its own... Even when driving

Since the problem began, the "1,2,3" buttons stopped woriking with the "SET" button to memorise the position. In fact, only the "3" button does

anything at all - which is basically to take you on a trip to all extents the seat moves to - each time it is pushed.

The seat also moves when parked and the ignition is off. Which sets of the alarm - so I have to keep disabling the internal sensors.

I have tried removing all power to the vehicle for 10 mins, but this did not improve matters. There is no fuse (my first idea) just some alleged

automatic overload protection trip...

It is booked in for a service and to have this looked at by the main dealer (!) in a week or so... In the meantime any ideas on how to make my journey

to/from work less "exciting" - plus at some point this is going to drain the battery... :(

I'd get the seat into a position you are happy with then try to unplug the power seat connection under the seat. Don't mistake this for the seat airbag plug!

sounds like you need a new memory seat switch, mine stopped working and replaced the switch by the seat and everything is fine now.

the memory seat switch by the seat can be disconnected by unplugging it, you can push the switch up from underneith and then disconnect it.

Thanks, have taken the switch unit out and had a look - the top of the unit came off as I was taking it out and it was quite contaminated - possibly water ingress.

Have given it a quick clean to see if this has an effect. Will report back...

Thanks again Wiilydog - was definitely the memory switch. Once disconnected completely the seat has not moved of its own accord.

Having completely disassembled the switch unit, it appears the unit is in no way splash (in my case snow!) proof, and given its reliance on switching different resistor values to detect various functions, any conductive residue on the PCB will play havoc with the seat mechanism (great design VW :wall: ).

So the moral of this story is. If your memory seat starts moving on its own, first thing to check is the memory button assembly, as it is easy to get to and disconnect.

Did you manage to get the switch cleaned up and working?

Andy..

how to do that...

I faced a strange problem similar to explained here...

yesterday my seat starts moving it own..

i tried couple of times to adjust it but it moved its own and stretched back ...

then all of sudden it stopped doing that... I am suspecting that I may have touch setup button, then press 1. but forget to unplug the the key and push unlock button..

but now I am scared if it starts moving again with its own..

one more thing.. I saw under the seat.. but could not really make out which thing I should unplug in case the situation again arise.

Pls. help in telling how to disconnect the memory button assembly?

Double post sorry

Reach your fingers down between the seat leather and the plastic base, then under the switch and push up gently. It should just pop out and can then be disconnected from the wiring.

still not enough confident..

I would post a picture what I saw under the seat...

Thanks..

Its not really under the seat as such, it is more to the side and really very simple.  You can't see the bit you need to play with from underneath...

As above you push from the side under the plastic cover on the side, you should be able to squeeze your fingers in between the leather and the plastic cover, once you feel the switch just give it a hard push underneath and it should pop right up. Then once it comes up just disconnect the connector on the back.

Hi Adamal,

I just took picture from the right side of my car seat, and tried to capture the picture of the switch, is it the same switch which we are talking about...

Pls. note the arrow where I am trying to point.

Kamal

No. I am talking about the switch on top of the plastic frame that supports the seat... Its the one you use to store the position to one of three settings etc

I think I need to take it to the service station as yesterday it didn't behaved that way but today again.. it started the same behavior started moving with its own.. but the problem is that if it start moving while driving to and the service station is far and full-traffic area.

I'm sorry to resurrect a dead post, but I had similar issues to VisibleEarth (OP) with my newly-acquired 2007 Octavia L&K:

 * I couldn't use the memory seat switch to set a new drivers seat position

 * the memory recall buttons behaved erratically (sometimes seeming to work, sometimes not)

 * when the car got warm after a few hours drive the driver's seat started to move itself (at speed in traffic, no less!)

I followed the advice here to remove the memory switch unit from the seat (the switch with buttons "SET", "1", "2", and "3").  I opened the unit up and found that there were clear signs of water ingress: the PCB in the switch had some corrosion on the switch pads (particularly the "SET" switch), plus a lot of greenish residue across the surface of the PCB (not unlike the right-hand-side of this image: http://www.evilution.co.uk/files/smartelectrics/ebox/ebox1.jpg albeit less severe).

I cleaned the switch and PCB down using a small flat-head screwdriver and a small piece of fine sandpaper to gently scrape/buff the gold-coloured switch contacts to remove corrosion deposits, before giving it a good blast with a can of compressed air, and then a mop-down with some isopropyl alcohol and cotton wool to get it good and clean of any residues.

I then re-assembled the switch unit and replaced it in the seat in my car -- and hey presto, I can now set memory seat positions.  I've not been for a long enough drive to ascertain whether the issues with the seat moving itself have been addressed, but I hope so!

Hi tldr. Was the switch easy to diassemble? Mine is not working and none of the reset advice given in other threads seem to work.

It's the thread that keeps on giving :-)

I'm afraid I just sold the car so I can't look it over again, but as I recall it wasn't hard to remove and take to pieces.  I think the switch unit itself popped out of the seat with a little leverage, and then access to the circuit board was via. a couple of clips.

Since I took it out the first time I had a repeat of the problem after we had the car door open while it was raining hard: the solution was the same again (remove switch and clean the circuit board).  But when I re-installed the switch unit I covered it over with a bit of duct tape for improved ingress protection.  We had no issues after that.
