Hi all,i am looking for some help in finding whats the problem with my car,

i have just recently put a second hand gearbox into my car,my old gearbox came to a sudden stop about two weeks ago and on the advice of my machinic i looked for a replacement gearbox, and after searching the breakers i found a crashed octavia with A Dsg gearbox with only 120,000 km on it,now got the car back last friday evening and drove it over 400 km over the weekend, but this evening when i started it a knocking sound seems to be coming out of the engine [i think] but the closer i listen it seems to be coming from the gearbox side of the engine,i cant really say where its coming from but as your looking under the bonnet into the engine the noise seems to be coming from the right hand side of the engine close to where the gearbox is,when i start it up she ticks over grand but when i rev it up the knocking noise gets louder, any advice lads on what you might think it might or could be...thanks for taking the time to look..

Oh dear.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

Sounds like it could be the DMF.

Phil

When you say the old gearbox came to a sudden stop, did it literally stop the engine dead?

If it did then it will have trashed the flywheel as Phil suggests.

well lads,i rang my machinic this morning and told him what the car was doing and what it sounded like and he told me to get my breakdown truck to tow it out to him,so i rang the breakdown service and they were out within a half a hour, the mechanic on board had a look and when i started it up the sound disappeared,he checked everything and still no sound off it,so i decided to drive it to my mechanic which is about 5 miles away when i arrived there my mechanic tried his computer on it and it showed nothing,he then drove it and still nothing,so he told me to keep driving it but to monitor it and see how it goes, and if the noise comes back then drop it over to him,so got home and left it for a while and started it up and still nothing,so a bit of a mystery.
