Windscreen cracked in the sun?

Featured Replies

I think I must've had an unseen stone chip on my windscreen up by the rearview mirror as I walked out to my car from work today to find a HUGE 18" crack horizontal across the top of the screen, from the roof down, and across. There's a definite impact point, which looks quite recent but I'm sure I haven't seen it before.

Could direct hot sunlight on a stone chip cause a large crack?

Anyway very efficient work from my insurer, and all booked in for mobile fitter for tomorrow afternoon, shame about the £75 excess. Hopefully they don't **** it up like you hear stories of, good so far in that he asked if it was the screen with an inbuilt aerial so seem to know what's what on a Fabia. I'll probably watch the fitter do it too.

I had mine replaced on my ;ast car, and they busted a couple of bolts on the trim, but came back a few days later with new bolts, so all ok.....

I had a stone hit right on very edge of the windscreen on my old Octavia, as there is no kind of trim on the edge it caused a crack to develop a few hours later. It was a sort of L shaped crack which went down and then across.

had a minor chip on my old roomster, shut the boot and it grew to 6 inch crack

wonder if shutting the door when you got out did it, would cause minor change to air pressure inside car flexing screen out slightly or vibration from door shutting

did you have aircon on cooling screen so more brittle?

I had a stone hit mine 2 miles from home (previous car). When I got home I left the car in the drive then returned to find a crack had run right across the screen.

Do check the installation as they can be shoddy, they left a rough edge on my dash where it met the windscreen (that was on a 2007 model,) Fortunately the face lifted dash is better constructed but do inspect the work.

Yep had the aircon on today and open / shut the boot before I left it.

I'm going to watch them do it I think, heard some stories about aftermarket screen fitters.

Mine also cracked 2 days ago, I already had a 4-5 inch crack thanks to my brother as he changed my wipers but the crack has gone to the edge of the windscreen now

It's getting replaced in 2 weeks, just hoping they replace it with the proper windscreen, with sun strip and that black outline along the edges that the VRS has.

Hi Harry, (good name that, it's mine too. They tell me they have never hung one!!) You must get in touch with whoever is doing the windscreen and insist they fit an exact replica of the one you have. Mine had the dark sun strip and they brought the wrong one so I sent him back to fetch the correct screen.

As soon as I find out who's coming to fit it, I will request that, thanks for the tip

I really do not like aftermarket sun strips and any decent one will cost around £20

if in any doubt, take photos to prove the before condition, close ups of where others have had minor issues if you can
