6 speed gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi all, Just wondering if I were to go for a 6 speed gearbox what else would I need to change? I currently have a 2001 PD100 its the ATD engine I think

Thanks in advance

Errm... Gearstick? Lol

Gearbox mounting?

Possibly cable..?

I dono... It's like 100 degrees, nearly 5am and I can't sleep.

Gearbox

Mountings

Driveshafts

Cables

Clutch pipe work

Clutch

Slave cylinder

Flywheel

Starter motor

Bell housing bolts

I have a vague memory of needing a console or two as well, when I did my conversion?  Something to do with the total length of gearbox & shafts being slightly different to the 5 speed?  It is a very vague memory I admit.

Yes correct the subframe and the n/s console are different to clear the larger gearbox/diff.

Perfect thanks for all the info guys makes it easier for me so I know what I need :)

Also would this be an expensive little project? Has anyone done it before?

Looking at the list of parts required it's pretty extensive.

In my head that means it's also going to be an long old job to do with equally extensive labour charges....

Might be better/easier getting hold of a scrapped car that's been rear ended or something and getting all the bits you need off it.

Why do you need a 6 speed box?

Also a cheaper way to get a 6 speed box on a ATD engine without changing 90% of the bits would be to get VW Touran 1.9tdi 105bhp (engine codes BKC or BXE) 6 speed box as they are basicaly a 5 speed box with an extra gear on the end.. they will fit using your original clutch + flywheel + driveshafts :)..

Iv seen it done to 9n3 polo gti 1.8Ts as they come with 5 speed boxes and the touran 6 speed allows the use of the g60/vr6 clutch + solid flywheel.. a much cheaper + quiter single mass flywheel conversion than the vrs 6 speed clutch flywhweel conversions.

Probably because with 170hp and the fairly short 5th gear on the PD100 you will run out of revs on top-speed kind of run so the extra gear will be needed to make use of the extra power without hitting the red line in top gear!

My 5spd seems quite log ratio's i though. At 5k it would hit 160 in theory

It's quite a bit of work. Have you considered selling it and getting a vRS?

Not a chance lol.. 170bhp wont turn into a bike engined supercar lol.. u wont run out revs at all :D..

The 6th gear is for economy only. So cruising at 80mph will be approx 2500rpm with a 6 speed and 2800rpm with a 5 speed.. really not worth unless youve got a big commute everyday..

+ 5 speed will have better ratios for general driving.. longer gears etc :)

it would probs be cheaper to sell up and get a vrs they are coming down in price considerably recently

6 speed (the "normal" geared one) is essentially the same as a 5 speed with smaller gaps in the gears, :)  I wouldn't waste time changing for the sake of gearing.  One benefit of the 6 speed is a bigger clutch for fitting better uprated clutches, but for most power levels the G60 clutch/flywheel combination is great on the 5 speed (and good value for money)
