Number plates

Featured Replies

Whats the best items/things/solvents that people use to remove the number plate sticky residue that is left on the car, as i have new plates and want a good base for the next plates to stick too.

Ive tried bug & tar remover before, but takes a while, and numerous cards but can scratch the paint.

Thanks in advance

Those "Label off" aerosol spray thingies should work fine. I use a local brand, but there shouldn't be much different between this and what you buy in the UK. Works on pretty much anything if its good enough quality. The cheap ones are normally diluted.

turps, t cut. polish, then clean all the area with mentholated spirts. in this order.

Petrol and then a polish. I personally hate the job of removing sticky pads lol

What do you do to scrap it off with as such?

I use AG tar remover. Put some on and leave it to soak for 5minutes. Then polish afterwards (once you've removed all the sticky stuff that is)

turpentine.... or yes petrol let it sit on the residue for 5 mins it will start to turn to a jelly like mush, rub of as much as possible then repeat as many times as it takes no need to scrap then t cut, polish then meths to finish before fitting new plates with sticky pads ...job done.

it sounds like a contradiction but you have to polish the paint work were the new plate is to go then remove the polish with meths because if you dont remove polish the new sticky pads wont stick as good. :hi:

Get a 'toffee wheel' of eBay there only about £8

WD40 should break down the gummy crud as well

What NathanG said. And then never use the sticky pads again! It took me ages to remove the remnants of the pads left on the tailgate.

They do their job, but are a nightmare to remove if you ever change your plates.

Had to do this twice recently. Same as Nathan said, AG tar remover done the job nicely. Also worked well on all the stickers on my brothers motorbike recently.

Powerhose

then

Petrol

or

Mr Sheen Furniture polish let sit for 5 mins

Nice wee polish and wax after

'Sticky stuff remover'. Halfords sell it in with all the cleaning bits.

Plaster remover or WD40, worked for me and the badges on the back of the car.

TARDIS

Toffee/caramel wheel will work fine on the back, however don't use it on the plastic front bumper.
