Temperature sender location

Featured Replies

As seems to be quite a popular fault, my water temperature gauge is playing up (sitting at cold, taking ages to rise to 90, dropping back down again with low revs, or nice down-hill runs etc). The car starts and runs fine still. Fortunately when I bought the car, sitting in the glove box was a new 'Temperature Sender 059 919 501 A'.

What I want to know is is this the coolant temperature sender, and if so, where abouts under the bonnet (1998 1.8l 20V non-turbo) should I look for the old one and is it a really easy 5-minute job to swap them?

Of course, if that doesn't fix the gauge I'll have to go and talk to the nice girl at the dealers, which isn't a bad option either ;)

Hi yes that is the right one.

4 pin green it should be.

There have been problems with these.

Make sure the engine is cold when you replace these.

Do not attempt it when it is hot.

But you will find it in the thermostat housing.

Just a clip holds it in.

Make sure the seal is seated correctly then just reclip.

It is that easy.

But please do it cold.

I have seen people who have been burnt with doing a simple job like this.

Sounds about right.

It's green and has 4 pins.

Oh' date=' it's only a little bit of pressurised rapidly boiling water. Nothing a few

skin grafts can't fix ;)

Excellent. Thanks.

Looks like I've got a weekend project.

Does the sender do anything apart from control the gauge? I'd assume it would be responsible for turning the fan on and off, and so if reading low the fan wouldn't turn on, and the engine would overheat. But that doesn't seem to be happening. Of course, I might only know if it was overheating before the steam-explosion by looking at the gauge ....

Hi no.

You have a seperate switch for the rad fan. This is located at the bottom of the radiator.

This may affect the fuel though as it monitors the engine temp and adjusts the fuel for cold starts.

Not a big job and if you have one and you think the temp guage is reading incorrect do it.

It`s easy.

Just had a go at doing it' date=' but it appears that either I haven't got the foggiest idea where the thermostat housing is, or that the sensor is different to the spare I've got.

This is the only 4-pin connection I can find anywhere near the cooling system:

Sensor location?

This is what the sensor looks like (it's blue, not green!):

Sensor pins

This is the spare sensor:

New sensor

And this is what it's connector looks like. Nothing at all like the blue one.

New sensor pins

So... am I looking in the wrong place, or do I need to buy a different sensor?

5173.attach

5174.attach

5175.attach

5176.attach

Thats the sensor you need to change but as you sayits a four pin blue not a four pin green, you have the wrong new sensor.

Bah  . At least I didn't pay for it.

Does anyone know the correct part number for the blue one and an approximate cost?

I can find out for you tomorrow. PM me your cars particulars.

There is a chassis dependant break in this part.

So if the one that ends in an a is not correct try the part number you have but without the a on.

The chassis break is x which if I remember correctly is about 2000.

It must have been left in the car as the previouse owner got it wrong.

059919501 4 pin blue.

which wire in the 4 pin plug goes to temp gauge?

All four do indirectly.

I cant honestly see auxilary gauges working with the Skoda set up. What voltage range does your gauge work at?

could i run a wire from the back of the clocks what colour wire goes to temp gauage

What voltage range does you gauge work at?

not sure i got it from option tuning it says on box dc 10-15v its got a red, black ,blue

wire on it i put the red to live black to ground and it say run the blue to water sender

The skoda sender works on 5v so i dont think it will work.

is there any were esle i could put it like tap in to the rad

is there any were esle i could put it like tap in to the rad
Why do you want another temperature gauge given that your car has a coolant temperature gauge in the instrument panel? And have you considered whether what you are trying to achieve might have an adverse effect on the correct operation of the coolant temperature/coolant level warning light?

so is there were i can put the sender i got with it or any way i can get this to work
