I don't know, VW shifted tens of thousands of them so maybe mass market is dictated by social trend. Were it proposed as the next big must have we'd be getting stripped out special edition Kia Picantos.

The old man bought my mom a 206 GTi when they first came out, compared it to my sister's then 309 GTi and it wasn't in the same league but the car was a celebrated handling success. Modern cars are garbage in terms of feel and the need for 2.5 turbo's engines to give remotely the same performance as yesteryear shows how far backwards the modern 'hot hatch' has gone. Hot hatches were built for keen drivers, now they're built for poseurs and business men lacking in the trouser department.

Sorry - just had to make a comment on this one. Have you ever sat inside a Focus ST?

I'd be self-harming after a week of ownership!

Ford? hahahahaha, Chelsea managers last longer than those buckets

The std mk2 golf Gti was quick but not fast in today's standard

The Golf GTI isn't a hot hatch? Give me strength!

Golf GTI is small for us so we will not consider it here a hot hatch

 mk2 16v 0-60 7.7 flat out 124

205 gti 0-60 7.2 flat out 129

Not too far behind and let's not forget that an anni 35 is packing 100bhp more than his late 80s relative and is only slightly quicker. However the point is no modern car is a hot hatch, the new Focus ST has to rely on computer aid to make it's engine note sound appealing. WTF?!

Yeah I know, I owned a mk2 for about 6 years, I was making the point that someone said the octy and golf aren't quick enough to be hot hatches

I think we should think of them as fast hatches hot hatches and über hatches

Audi s3 Bmw and amg also on price grounds and maybe "Astra vxr on power " über

Megane golf performance pack ,focus st hot

Golf normal vrs octi Alfa cloverleaf Mazda mps, others warm

208,fiesta st Clio small hot hatches

Lol it's bloody complicated and that's before you say which are rubbish or the like !

You cant define them - people would disagree with each others opinion. For instance - Focus ST hot but Mazda MPS warm? Have you ever driven an MPS and ST? ANd why no mention of the Focus RS? In straight line terms Id put the AMG and probably the M135i is a class apart from the others for sure though . :)

Just a random debate, doesn't actually matter if they are or are not hot hatches.Though a 3 series GT is certainly NOT a hot hatch.  :giggle:

 Still loving the new vRS and will be making enquiries but cannot for the world of me believe it'll touch the handling of my Golf or even my 93 Polo

Is the real reason for the lukewarm reception here because the vRS is just too expensive, reducing the value aspect of ownership

So this is a typical Whatcar hot hatch comparison-

Fiesta ST

V

Golf GTi

V

VXR8

I was always under the impression that a hot hatch was generally Fiesta/ Fabia / 208  as these cars are now the size that the original Golf GTi was.

Surely there should be a new category for the cars that have bulked up in size that push them into family cars- Octy vRS, Mondeo ST current Golf Gti.
