just looking at my gearbox mount and there seems to be quite abit of play in it, i can pull the box towards the front of the car by a good 3-5mm. Is this normal?

It should move a little but not a lot. Replace with a Powerflex item (eBay). Red are a little softer than yellow

I've a yellow one in my vrs and its settled down nicely after 600 odd miles.

check the upper gearbox mount too...if there you have a play,the dogbone doesn't matter how stiff it is,because the wheel hop will be still there

 

I recently replaced the gearbox upper mount,and combined with the red powerflex dogbone the result is great,no vibrations,no loose tranny,everything is tight during gear changes
