Remapped CR 170's? Especially ones with DPF delete and proper tuning? Are they bad?

I am not sure a dpf delete is a good thing to do, unless you keep the dpf.

 

 I was speaking to a mate yesterday who has his own garage and MOT's cars, he has information that the MOT is to have a few changes to the way emissions and the exhaust system on vehicles are maintained.

 

 The idea is simple, if it was fitted it should be there and working, so EGR delete, DPF delete or any other sensor removal or tampering could make it impossible to pass an MOT. Something to think about for thousands of modded cars.

Ah, the joy of DPF's and MOT's.

 

Lots of talk of potential MOT failures but none reported on here, the opposite in fact, lots cars with DPF's removed fly through their MOT's.

 

Even the DoT can't provide a clear answer so what hope have the poor MOT test stations got.

 

MOT testers aren't allowed to remove components, so as long as the DPF has been gutted instead being of removed completely (with a straight through pipe) the tester can't prove the DPF isn't as standard.

 

Diesels only have to pass a soot test so as long as the car is nice and hot and has had a good Italian tune-up on the way to the MOT station all should be OK.

It's not an exact science as every car is different...

 

CR170's are less likely to smoke than PD170's. 

Higher mileage diesels often smoke more than lower mileage diesels.

Mapped diesels often smoke more than factory spec diesels.

Different maps affect the amount of smoke produced (stage 0, 1, 2 etc.)

Supermarket fuel or premium fuel?

Fixed service intervals (more regular fresh oil) or variable servicing?

Do you drive it like you've stolen it or tootle around like Miss Daisy?

 

There aren't as many remapped, DPF removed, CR170's around as there are PD170's. The PD170 certainly can smoke like a chimney, especially with a Stage 1 or 2 remap, but then there are others who have them and they don't smoke much at all.

My vRS CR 170 was remapped to 210bhp by AMD Technic in Thurrock.  I then went back for a DPF delete and same map was used - but power increased slightly to 215bhp/348Ib/ft torque (unadapted).

 

I've had it for a month or two now and there is hardly any noticeable smoke - in fact only if you boot the car do you get a little wisp but it's literally unnoticeable.

 

In contrast, I had a 'bad' remap from another company with a previous car I owned and you wouldn't believe the amount of diesel smoke.  It was ridiculous.  It was like I was burning a tyre on a bonfire.

 

I think a lot of it comes down to who does the work and how they remap the car.

 

One thing I will say is - once you get rid of the DPF you get rid of any problem(s) that can be associated with it (that's why I got mine removed) and also the car revs and feels like its breathing more freely (hard to explain) but you'll feel the difference if you do it.
