Columbus sat nav- DAB

Featured Replies

Hi all,

first post!

I bought my yeti 6 months ago- love it :)  It's a greenline with lots of things in it but in particular i'm looking for thoughts/ opinions/ experiences of the Columbus satnav.

My mum recently also bought a Yeti... also with a Columbus satnav.... but get this... it's DAB!  Why isn't mine?

Does anyone know anything about updating my Columbus satnav to DAB as well?  Seeing as the dealer that sold my mum's didn't know it was DAB I don't think there will be much point asking them... Same dealer that sold mine as well although a different guy (and a very much worse service!).  In theory there is only 5 months between the Yetis.

What do you reckon?  Wonder as my experience of purchasing my yeti was so so bad + I asked about DAB and was told NO.... If they had said to wait 6 months and I could have it I would!!  Where do you go to ask these things?  I really have no idea where to start apart from the dealer I purchased it from but it was such a bad experience i'm not really wanting to go back there again...

Hi Nicki85 and welcome!  Sorry I can't help re Columbus (I have Bolero) but someone else will no doubt come up with the answer.

Perhaps you might think it appropriate to post your dealer experience on the forum? - dealer reviews are down near the bottom of the main menu.

Glad you love your Greenline...

Hi Nicki,

Columbus didn't have DAB when you got yours, now it does by default.

I suspect, based on most experiences of Skoda UK, that the dealers find out about what is available some time after the general public does.

Certainly that appears to be my experience anyway.

I'm not one to defend the dealers as my "limited" experience of a couple isn't that great but i do get the impression, based on what i've read on here, that they don't get the sort of support they should from SUK centrally.

Have a look at the PureHighway 300i add-on that the dealerships are offering. It looks surprisingly neat and I half considered it for Ottie (only 10 sleeps to go!!!). If I was desperate to have DAB now, I'd have gone for it (about £275 fitted IIRC); the only reason that I didn't is that I'm not and I'm happy to wait until FM stops in (your guess is as good as mine) a few years. At that time, I'll look at the best possible DAB add-in available at the time. I suspect that when the digital changeover eventially happens the range, quality and price of aftermarket DAB adaptors will be even better than it is now.

I looked at Amundsen with DAB , but decided against it over the standard (SE) Bolero. My reasons: I didn't want to pay nearly £900 for a boot-mounted autochanger and (yes, you hear me right) a SATNAV that I don't want.

If DAB is your thing, I'd certainly check out the reviews for the Pure Highway and talk to a dealer about it or a good indie installer. It really is a very neat installation. BTW, there is another system called AutoDAB and I heard (from a respected ICE installer) that there can be incompatibility issues with this one and some vehicles. PureHighway seems the better bet and Skoda are clearly backing it.

Hope this helps.

Isn't there an add in board for units before dab was made standard?

Can't see the point of DAB as the reception can still be dodgy or even non-existent in some areas. I remain to be convinced that the DAB sound is an improvement on FM.

Having said that, the only reason that I have for using DAB in the car is to listen to Test Match Special on 5Live Extra - as the Bolero unit doesn't have Long Wave. I just plug my Pure Move 2500 (very small - sits in a shirt pocket) via the headphone socket of the radio to the AUX socket in the armrest. The lead I use is about a metre long and works fine in areas of good reception. It's like having an add-on unit but one that you can take with you and use when you leave the car. The rechargeable internal battery lasts for about 14 hours of use.
