towbar/holder recommendations for bikes on octy estate

Featured Replies

Hi

As the topic suggests we're looking for a decent quality bike rack (4 bikes) to go on the back of the car. We can't put them on the roof 'cos that's where the box goes (in which I keep the wife on long journeys). I don't want one of those ones which strap to the back 'cos they knack the paintwork and deny access to the tailgate.

We don't have the towbar yet so all options are available (if you have suggestions for a particular type of towbar for example). If anyone has an opinion we'd be happy to hear it!

thanks :)

Chris.

Hi,

I've got Octy VRS estate. Fitted a Westfalia detachable and use a Thule tow bar fitting rack for three bikes. Have to say fits a dream and solid when on. Good combination for me.

I'll second the Westfalia detachable, fantastic bit of kit, for a 4 bike carrier i'd look at towball mounted carriers like the new Witter range zx408 or 412 or the Thule 3 bike with the extra bit for a forth bike.

If you want access to the boot with bikes attached avoid towbar mounted carrriers

If you go for a Ball mounted carrier it wont matter what type if towbar you  have.

Swan necks are normally the cheapest, followed but flange bars, detachable towbars are normally the most expensive.

Yup, Westfalia swan neck detachable. Just come back from 2 weeks in France using ours. Our tow ball mounted bike rack is the hinged type to allow the rack to tilt backwards without removing the bikes.

I have a Witter tow bar mounted rack zx300 whic holds 3 bikes and can be dropped to give access to the estate boot, they do a 4 bike model too

Being proper lazy and not googling it myself but how much does this cost?!

Also does it tilt back enough to let a do get in and out?!?

Cheers

If the bikes are properly stowed then they drop back on the rack so that the handlebars touch the ground. Will your dog be able to negotiate that?

He should be able to but to be honest he's a bit of a clumsy idiot so knowing him he'll trip on them and break it all! ????????

But I prefer this option to a roof carrier I think
