vrs owner wanting a yeti. performance differences?

Featured Replies

I currently drive a fabia vrs remapped to 179bhp and 340 lb/ft of torque. I need a bigger car because of family, dog etc. Still want good performance though. My question is, if I remapped a 170 yeti to 210 approx with close to 300 torque how would this compare to my vrs? I know the yeti is heavier but will have more bhp. Will it be as quick? How about the gearing of the yeti? Will this affect it too?

Take at look at BossFox's Yeti. That has been fettled a little and has done a few track days & How Fast days. Not many Skoda's out there that are quicker.

PS apart from Yeti_Man's stage 2 1.8 tsi that is

See both in the Yeti project section.

As you may (or may not) know OP, I previously had a Fabia VRS SE 1.9 TDI which was tuned to around 260bhp and 400 torques. Obviously it was a lot swifter than the Yeti.

However...

The Yeti is more capable than it looks.

For a start it is better balanced than the Fabia which is nose heavy. Plus you have the benefit of 4x4 which lets you get on the power early.

Map only to map only the Fabia is going to feel quicker because the old PD lump delivers all it's power in a lump while the newer CR engine is a lot smoother and more refined.

Overall the Yeti will be about as quick in a straight line, but will be better in the corners, once you accept the additional body roll.

I've done two MSV "How fast" events now and only been beaten by one mk1 Fabia, Devonutopia's Mongrel with around 300bhp, uprated brakes, suspension etc... It's quicker than a mapped mk1 Fabia VRS round there.

By the way, for a small car the Fabia is heavy at around 1,300kg.

So the Yeti is only around 200kg more which considering that includes 4x4 seems good to me.

It's an all round better car too in terms of comfort, spec, practicality and is nice to drive. Just a remap gives it the acceleration feel it lacks from the factory.

Cheers for that bossfox. The yeti will be better in the corners? Wasn't expecting that one.

Any videos of your yeti around the track?

Comparing stock to stock, yes.

It's a better package with superior traction and balance.

It's not a sports car, but the mk1 Fabia is an older design Front Wheel Drive with a not particularly good weight balance.  The front is too heavy.

In the Yeti you can get on the power noticably earlier in the corner and the Haldex does it's stuff! :)

Have you considered an Octavia Estate vrs? That would give you all the space you need in a car designed and built for performance rather than trying to cobble together mods to a car not built for outright performance. In the vrs, suspension, brakes, set up etc are all factory tuned for performance as well as the engine.

Take a look at my videos from a previous Track day, the damp one from the rear camera is the best

Yeah thought about an Octavia but I'm being drawn in by the yeti. Any regrets bossfox, getting rid of your vrs?

Well, I preferred the Race Blue. :D;)

It was fun, but the Yeti is a much better all round car.

To be fair though I bought a different toy for track days... So I'm not missing the performance of my 260bhp Fabia.

Although it was a cracking car.

For some reason I bought another VRS SE (I do like Race Blue) which my brother has borrowed.

My history is Leon Fr 2.0Tfsi, Yeti 140 and now 1.8 Tsi. The Seat was (at 200hp) the quickest and there is no avoiding the fact the Yetis have both had less out and out performance. The loss of a second in 0-60 and 20mph top speed makes less difference than you may fear in journey times, much time spent over 100 is high risk for the licence and absolutely flat out sprinting is not such a frequent thing. The additional time you gain in planning overtakes from the higher view point is useful. If your insurers will wear it and if you are willing to self insure against engine failure you can easily brew up a very quick Yeti.

Best you drive either a 170 diesel or a 1.8 and see how you get on.

Remapped 170 diesel is the route I want. There just still a tad bit expensive at the moment

Wait for the facelift, if prices are going to drop it'll be a few months afterwards as the part exchanges come in...

The problem with the Yeti is that it currently holds it's value so well it's not good value second hand.

That's why currently I'd buy new with a discount or wait.
