Vibrations and grinding

Recommended Posts

Taking mine in tomorrow for a checkup. Noticed tonight on the way home, it seemed to shake when changing into 4th and 5th gear. Went out later and realised that I can hear a constant clicking noise.

Thinking it was just me, my sister joined me, and as I was reversing off the vehicle, it made a horrible grinding noise, and felt heavier to drive.

Hope it's a quick and inexpensive resolve!

in warranty?

does clicking get worse at low speed on far amount of steering angle? if so possible CV Joint / drive shaft, put car on full lock and have a look if rubber gaiter inside wheel is split (easy to tell, there will be grease sprayed everywhere)

but I would get it to a dealer if in warranty, or a good independent garage if not fairly quick to get a check of what it is and if there are any safety implications

make sure you have some recovery / breakdown cover

I would personally choose somewhere different to Halfords, do you not have a local VAG specialist nearby?

roughly what area of country you in? sure someone can make a suggestion of 2

I'm in Hartlepool. Sadly Skoda dealers are Middlesbrough and Sedgefield. I only work 10 mins away from Pullmans in Durham, I just don't want to risk getting through there

be wary what you tell them, do not ask directly if it is safe to drive as I have heard of a case where they told someone it had to be fixed there as to dangerous to drive

basic services and brakes etc I have no problem with but more complex I don't think they have the skills as they don't see the other stuff a proper garage does

just tell them you have a noise, when it occurs and roughly where you think it is coming from

if they say something bust ask them to show you, you read some shocking stories on here and other places about national chains, but having said that I know some mechanics from these and they are good guys, but some are shocking

They've normally been pretty good with us, it was there a few weeks ago for its MOT.

When I'm due a service, I always take it to the dealer where I got it from.

I'll just wait and see if the can identify and repair, if not take it though to Middlesbrough.

Thanks for your assistance! :)

any update on the noise, and if Halfords identified it

another possibility is a stone / debris caught in caliper / brake pad, had that one myself

Hi all,

Well took it round but was told they were too busy today, but got it booked in for tomorrow. Sadly only dealers in town are Ford and Vauxhall dealers.

Although have to admit it didn't feel as bad when driving it to the garage this morning, vibrations still there when changing gear, but no grinding noise.

Hope they get it sorted though. Been kindly loaned my parents Fiat Doblo to get to work. It ain't the same as my Fabia!

Well, took it in, they couldn't hear anything or find anything, and to be fair, whilst dropping it off and picking it up tonight, no noise or vibrations at all. Also no charge as well :)

And so the saga continues...

Drove it to work this morning and the stuttering was back, along with loud clicking noise from engine. Took it to Pullmans and seem to think its an issue with the camshaft. It's going back in on Monday for diagnostic checks.

is it a PD 1.4 engine or the newer 1.2 CR engine?

if the PD engine, possible cam or injector problem, has the services been done on time? dealer, independent or your serviced the car?

cam cover been disturbed?

Update: went to try it out on Sunday, could smell smoke. No way I was going to drive through to Durham in it. Arranged for it to be picked up and taken to Derek Slack's in Middlesbrough.

Mechanics have looked at it, and they've said the camshaft has worn. Was going to be over £1200 to repair. However they've been in contact with Skoda, and Skoda have agreed to pay 45% of it.
