Tried that, didnt work :-( and now abs/power steering lights are flashing but not reading a fault. When it was jump started it sounded like it was struggling to keep goin. Its freeeking cursed this car

if it was jump started okish? is the battery ok?

Jus bought a brand new one today because thought that was the reason.

Is the earth strap from the battery to the nearside front turret giving a 100% connection.

DB

Is it actually turning over?

I have one for a 1.9 TDI (Polo 9N) that works, but squeals on startup (the reason we changed it, I think it needs a new bearing). If thats fine for you, pm me.

130 bhp?

Don't think it makes a difference. Will find the part number in a minute.

Edit: 02A 911 024 D

Makes a big difference, 6 speed starter is different to a 5 speed.

Ah fair enough, I thought it just needed the power to turn the 4 cylinders and they you just couldn't use one from either a petrol or a 3 cylinder. Its from a 5 speed 100hp Polo.

Just trying to help :)

Thankyou all

well it turned out that the guy with one is actually the wrong one! has a different number of teeth or something.   not looking good. Always happens on a weekend when nowhere is open.

Shouldn't there be a solenoid that should click?

Strange for them to just go, generally a noise which is the bruishes

It just wouldn't work all of a sudden, the battery was drained after a few minutes so bought a new battery, started up twice, tried an hour later - nothing. It just makes a clicking noise once.

Then when it was jump started, the power steering went and engine sounded like it was really struggling. It doesn't make much sense.

The reason for thinking it is the starter motor is also that it was very hot after it had been switched off a while - sticking open maybe???

If the battery is and has drained quickly and is flat, that could indicate the alternator has failed.

Alternator can fail in a way that it draws so much current that it flattens the battery very quickly and it won't start.

I'd wiggle the wires on the starter use electrical cleaner and check ground wires etc

Afraid I can't check my starter anymore, the guy who gave me the wrong one has it and is apparently now on holiday. arrrghhhh.

Ok, so managed to get the starter motor back and made a dummy starter lead and it started, but then the engine starts juddering and power steering went, all warning lights came on then it cut out. No vagcom codes coming up though :(

theres a wire that goes to the alternator thats common for breaking. that could be causing the battery to not be recharged. if starter / battery are ok

that's the problem, it does recharge after its jump started, then as soon as you try to switch it back on...nothing. frustrating is not the word.

the battery terminals / clamps clean and tight so giving a good connection? also earth strap clean and in good condition

Yep and yep which is why its so annoying. I think it genuinely is cursed

Does the ignition light come on?
