What do people make of this? What's in it for Skoda? Is it simply that they are ensuring that they get the repair work?

Claim management.  They will charge the insurance company of the person responsible for the accident.  Puts up the cost of claims and hence the cost of insurance for all insured drivers.

 

Many other car companies do the same, e.g., Honda.
