A 4x4 for less than

Featured Replies

Cousin came up with idea that we go halfers on a cheap 4x4 so we can go on beaches to certain fishing spots where it would be a several miles walk otherwise. Keep it for a year or two and when it falls apart scrap it. I don't think it's reasonable since it's all well and good saying we go 50/50 but what happens when it needs something and at this price it will. Who puts fuel in it? Who sorts insurance? Who keeps it? etc.

I'm just wondering if it's even possible to get a 4x4 for that money that's any good. £2k maybe but I'm not spending that much. What 4x4 would be best to go for? I'd like a Defender but these would be big money for something decent. What are the alternatives?

  • Suzuki SJ413, cheap and cheerful and easy to maintain. Maybe even Jimny's in your price range now.

  • I'd say Suzuki too. Small engine, reliable, cheap.   Or maybe a Rav 4   http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201307087703905/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/price-to/1000/model/rav4/make/toyota/on

  • How about the Suzuki Vitara or the Daihatsu Sportrak?  Old ones tend to go for less than the Jimny or Fourtrak equivalents.  Or there's the Daihatsu Terios if you can live with the looks.  If you want

I have a Range Rover P38, R registered, needs an MOT you can have it for a grand.

Freelanders go cheap at auction. Just get a basic 2.0 diesel L-series engined one

Think it's a bit big for what we need. What are the specs?

Plenty of Discoverys around for under a grand.

A question I have asked myself from time to time. Essentially, there isn't a lot of choice. The only Land Rover you'll get for under £1000 will be an early Discovery - rust, rust, rust. Try and find one with as little rust as possible.

Aside from the other suggestions, may I bring forward the Ford Maverick

Those look ideal. Shows cars in South Wales are overpriced. There's dreamers on eBay wanting £2k+ for something like that. I'll look into Rav4's too.

Didn't think of one of those.

you can probably get a Mitsubishi Pajero cheap, a MK II,  I had one of those too, it was dreadful on fuel, it was dreadful as a tow car and did I mention it was dreadful full stop!!

They are cheap though, as are Daihatsu four tracks, like to rot though but the 2.8 turbo is a good motor.

Most of the running will be on beaches. A left field choice someone come up with was a Subaru of some kind

ground clearance is poor on any 4x4 car, Audi allroad, subaru forrester or even a justy.

Have you considered an old Hi lux, they look tatty and sell cheap too, just look at the chassis for rust, doesn't matter if tin worms have ravaged the body work.

Go to autotrader, select national for your search, select £1000 max and leave everything else as any, once you open the first page put 4X4 in the search and then look what comes up, loads of them, all cheap

oh yes, it did come up in a search for 4x4 and states 4x4 in the top of the ad, but the first line does show 2wd, sorry chaps.. it is cheap though

Yeah, don't buy from Wales. Cars in Wales are considerably more expensive than those in England.

I like Fourtracks but they don't half rot. My friend had a Maverick for a while. Pretty competent off road and on road. His was a petrol. Don't expect more than 27mpg.

Surely it's illegal to drive on a beach? I thought unless it was classified as a 'Byway open to all traffic' then it is forbidden to drive on it without the expressed permission of the land owner, there are places in the uk where there are car parks and small areas which have been designated as a road by the local authority but these are few and far between, as far as I can tell an area of beach land/dune is either privately owned or is common land.

Blackrock sands is very drivable, as is Southport to mention a few.

You can drive on Brean sands,

have been able to for as long as I can remember.

My old SDI even got down there once.

Peak season you have to pay but off peak you don't.

3 dr 1.6 vitara is the way to go. Cheap and nasty, easy to repair and decent off road.

Agreed, the one linked is ideal and not too bad looking either

with the bull bars, rally giants and knobbly tyres.

I'd buy it if I were in the market for such a thing.

And only about 40miles away from the where the OP lives.

I reckon they would take 900 for cash.

Fiat Panda 4x4. Fantastic off road cars as long as ground clearance isn't an issue. I remember a friend (Ian )had one of the original 1.0 versions and if I remember right, it was 2 wheel drive till you put it in 4x4 then it connected the rear wheel drive directly, so it acted like a 4x4 with a diff lock in. Unstoppable. We went anywhere his dads Lada Niva, Land Rover and Range Rover could go.

Only downsides are rust and it is quicker to travel by space hopper

Actually that's a thought. How much are Lada Nivas?

Heres one  The only thing is I remember they were all LHD, but as long as it isn't a conversion I guess this looks like a possible start

Just asked Ian about his dads Niva

they have dilf lock, transfer box, coil springs asthmatic 1.6 engine, LHD and super bouncy ride.
