A 4x4 for less than

The 4x4 will be used to access fishing spots which would normally mean a very long walk. The beaches we'd want to drive are fine and cocklers are regularly using them. The 4x4 may be used eventually for towing and launching a boat but this would be a while off yet and would take come convincing. I'd love a boat instead of a kayak purely because whatever car I bought next wouldn't have to be based on having to carry it. Of course I could use the 4x4 to carry my kayak but I don't have room to keep it but my cousin does.

A Suzuki of some description seems sensible and there are a few about, parts should be easy to come by and if we stripped it we should make some money back. I've only ever seen one Lada Niva on the road in about 10 years but could be worth considering if it was cheap enough. Parts would be scarce though.

  • Suzuki SJ413, cheap and cheerful and easy to maintain. Maybe even Jimny's in your price range now.

  • I'd say Suzuki too. Small engine, reliable, cheap.   Or maybe a Rav 4   http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201307087703905/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/price-to/1000/model/rav4/make/toyota/on

  • How about the Suzuki Vitara or the Daihatsu Sportrak?  Old ones tend to go for less than the Jimny or Fourtrak equivalents.  Or there's the Daihatsu Terios if you can live with the looks.  If you want

What about a quad bike? I've seen road legal 4x4 ones going for less than £300 on eBay, and they ae super cheap to insure too.

You could strip out a Jimny and get it lighter, suitable tyres and it can Tow onroad and lunch a boat.

I would look for an Automatic.

I have had quads & had them stolen,  never been able to insure them cheaply due to being Toe Rag Magnets.

Needed Secure Locks cemented into the ground to try and hold onto them.

A Nissan Terrano might not be too bad. When I sold them they were reasonably reliable (seemed to be better than the equivalent Ford for some reason?) and decent off road. Reasonably good off road with a transfer box and some of the parts will be the same as on the Ford Maverick so spares will be available.

Depends what sort of fishing you do but a Suzuki may be a bit on the small side.

Frontreas are ok but the petrols are thirsty

The one I don't want to go anywhere near is a Frontera. His brother had one before and that struggled to pull away in a sandy car park let alone anything else

They had a bit of a reliability issue for the most part, too

My dads couldnt reach the summit of the driveway it fell apart that often, let alone anywhere else. There isnt many cars I can say this about but I cant recall anyone saying anything good about them :D

A Model T Ford went up Ben Nevis in 1911 & again in 2011.

Sea Side beaches tend to be at the Seaside which tend to be at Sea level.
