octavia mk1 notchy crunchy gear change

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

After changing my gearbox oil I am still finding my gear changes really notchy with me having to really push them in really hard. It sometimes crunches aswell mainly when forcing it into first. The clutch seems ok with no slipping it also bites quite low. Have you any idea's what this problem could be? I think I am going to try and adjust the linkage set up would this make any difference?

Thanks in advance.

James.

Syncros maybe?

What oil did you use?, was it VAG or another brand?.

Have you reset your linkage yet? Which gears are you having issues with? or is it all of them?

I had similar issue,1st an reverse,  reset linkage and much better.

I used comma oil as my skoda dealer told me my car was to old and they did not supply that oil anymore.

I am going to try the linkage in the next few days. I really like this car.,its just this issue is really putting me off it.

Why do some main dealers do this I had the same problem from seat for my wifes alhambara they wouldn't give me a price for a gearbox oil change they said they don't do it should last the life of the car, but it had been changed by the previous owner with non genuine and was shocking when cold so I had to buy 2litres of genuine gear oil from them and got our local garage to replace it its much better with genuine oil when cold .

But which gears dude.....

"Comma oil" = "Emergency use only" IMO.

You say the clutch bites quite low....

Think this might be the problem. Whether it be slave, master, or just fluid/air issue, or even the clutch itself.

I had the same problem when I first got my vrs then did box oil change (£12 from dealer) and reset the linkage and like a new car now and lovely and smooth.

.....reset the linkage .....

How can i do it?

Here are 3 threads that should fill in most of the gaps, from several members who have already done this, including our resident legend Bowders. Hope it helps. Also, what state is your dogbone mount in?, as this can cause selection issues sometimes.

This should be your gear oil part number, it is current and orderable from main dealer - G060726A2.

the dealer oil is well cheap at £6 a litre.

^^THIS^^

You shouldnt really have a low biting point.

Check/change the fluid, bleed it and see how it feels - these are the cheaper options along with trying to reset the linkage and changing your gearbox oil.

After this it is either a Slave Cylinder or Clutch issue. :)
