Damsel in distress - headlamp adjustment for European driving

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong place (I'm not great on forums!) but I'm driving to France for the first time on Friday morning and have read various things online that it's easy to adjust the headlamps on a Skoda Superb to be suitable for European driving.

I don't intend to drive at night (we arrive 9am Friday and leave 5pm Monday and I won't be moving the car in between!) but I'd rather make sure we comply with the regulations because I'm a good girl really :)

We have a 2007 Superb 2.0 TDI - will it be a simple job which someone like my Dad can do for me? Or am I better going to Halfords and getting some deflectors to stick on? I'd really rather not stick anything on to my headlamps, so if this mythical lever inside the headlamps is easy to access, that would be my preferred route, but it would be great to get your advice on this.

Thanks so much in advance.

I managed to do my xenon adjustments for eu driving in 5 mins without removing the headlights.  It's just that on the drivers side the cold air inlet pipe had to be taken off to gain access to the lever in the headlight housing.

From memory on the passenger side you gain access through the main beam bulb opening and on the other side you have to get the dipped beam bulb cover off and then put your finger on the drivers wing side of the projector where the lever has to go up or down I cant remember.

I recently drove to Europe and only did daytime driving so I didn't bother with any adjustments as I couldn't see it as an issue and never got pulled either

It is the law in France to have correct adjustment even in broad daylight.

On the nearside pull main beam bulb cap off and look for a little lever.  On the offside, pull the dipped beam bulb cover (part of inlet ducting will need to be pulled off beforehand, takes 30 secs.  The lever is on the side of the projector towards the driver's side wing.

Easy enough, don't understand why dealers want to remove the bumper and the headlights (£200 labour) to do this!  All it takes in 5 mins.  And I was glad nobody got blinded at night, the beam is flat.
