HELP URGENTLY - GLOW LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON & WONT START

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a MK1 Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi, my glow light does not come on all the time when it does the car will start if the glow light does not come on the car will not start at all. I have changed the glow plugs and I have changed the Glow plug relay 103.

1)Does my car have the ignition control unit? Or Does it have an ignition coil pack? Could this be the problem?

2) Could it be the injector and glow plug rail?

3) Could it just be a dirty fuel filter?

Please can someone advise or help with the problem?

Thanks

Could be a failed coolant temp sensor. ECU relies heavily on the CTS & it's one of the most common failures on VAG cars. I would look to see if you have the revised green sensor fitted, if not fit a genuine VAG CTS only, & not a cheap ebay jobbie as they rarely work properly.

In this warm weather you don't need the glowplugs to start. The glowplug light should go off immediately after you turn the ignition on, as there is no preheat required.

You have a diesel so you won't have a coil pack. Technically, there is no ignition as diesel burns rather than explodes - no spark required.

When you turn the key to start, does the starter crank?

The glowplug light doubles as the EML (Engine Management Light). If you have never seen the light, it is possible that a previous owner has disabled it to hide a fault.

VCDS diagnostic needed. Must be a member near you, so put a request out in the VCDS/Vagcom section of the forum.

Where do I find this?

The starter is fine she will turn over until the battery is flat if the glow light has not come on so you have to wait a couple of minutes could be ten minutes then the glow light will flag up and she will start

could be the main relay (109?)   or the cut-off solenoid if it's the pre PD engine

I think the problem is with relay 109 (common fault) which is the ECU power relay. If the ECU doesn't get power then the glowplug light won't come on - even for a lamp check.
