Part worn tyres?

Featured Replies

I am selling my Getz to a work colleage as soon as it passes its MoT test which is booked for Saturday coming.  I had the car checked over and all it needs for the test is two tyres on the front.  The cheapest new tyres I have found fitted are £36 each (£72 for pair).  However there is a plce near where I work who will fit two part worn tyres for £42, saving me £30.  If I was keeping the car I would buy new tyres of a mid range make.  Any thoughs on part worn given it is only to get the car through its MoT?

{cues up Jaws theme} :giggle:

Seriously, I'd not do that to my boss's daughter for the sake of 30 quid.

Is this part worn decent tyres or really cheap ditchfinders?

I don't get the part worn / ditch finder tyres that get fitted. You may save £10-15 a corner but how much is your insurance excess? I bet it is a lot more than the cost of a decent set of tyres.

I wouldn't do it to someone I didn't know let alone a colleague.

Buy cheap, buy twice....

Remember every second hand car that is purchased in any country usually comes with pre-owned/part worn tyres, pre-owned/part worn brakes, pre-owned/part worn shocks.

Shocks are the most important thing keeping you in contact with the road, how many people when buying any second hand car replace these for brand new ones?

I buy new but cannot understand the aggro part worns get off people that have purchased many part worn items in the past.

Bought from a reputable retailer, then part worns are fine.. especially as you're only looking to get it through an MOT.

I'd take a set of part worn Bridgestones, Toyos etc with 4mm tread over a set of Vietnamese budget ditch finders with 7mm any day of the week.

get your colleague to choose the tyres he/she wants but let them know it will be reflected in the price or let them buy them before the MOT :)

I use part worn tyres but for £72 a pair i would buy new.I would rather have quality part worns than cheap cack ditchfinders that are new personally though
