Buying 16" alloy rims - need help :)

Featured Replies

I would like to buy 16" alloy rims with 205/55/R16 summer tires for my Octy and it would be much appreciated if you could advise on "fitted" wheel dimensions.

To be more exact, I would like to know min/max dimensions for 16" rims that I have to buy for this tires and not to have any problems during exploitation (inset/outset (ET) and J's)?

Also, if it not to much, can someone tell me the "ET" and "J" for this 15" rims (guess this was factory OEM)?

Thx in advance.

Standard is 6.5Jx16ET42. ET38 will also fit with 205/55R16 tyres on VAG wheels. If you have DS3 front calipers, you may experience caliper clearance problems with aftermarket wheels, particularly with 312mm discs.

Thx mate.

I can't measure it, but it looks like 280-290 mm disks.

Could this pic help to clarify type of calipers?

Just to clarify, you were saying that my option is two type of rims for these tires with exact "J" of 6.5?

One is 6.5Jx16 ET42 and the second is 6.5Jx16 ET38.

Nothing in between ET42 and ET38 and no other "J"?

will probably be 288mm disks on a 2.0litre petrol

Why are you going to 16" rims?

I have modified 4x4 1.8T and have run 16's (standard) and 17's (off a VRS) but am now running on 15's (Audi Pepperpots) and they are the best

Planned to drive 16" on summer and 15" on winter with these stock rims and also to have a quick swap when seasons change and to have better stability during summer with 16" tires (especially on high speeds).
Am I wrong?

It's got "FS III" cast into it; therefore it's an FS III caliper which won't accomodate discs above 280mm. 280mm discs may be as big as you could go on 15" rims.

That said, you should be able to fit just about any 15 or 16 wheel as long as the offset isn't above ET42.

Oh and 6.5Jx16ET42 with 205/55R16 tyres is standard on the Elegance and L&K models (UK at least) and on the vRS in some markets.

Thank you very much for this info.
This one is SLX year 2000.
Just one question more, plz..
Generally speaking (considering everything about this car) is it a mistake to go an inch up with these 16" tires for summer and will I benefit considerable stability and grip on wet condition (with proper tires-was planning Nokian on it)?

The SLX was replaced by the Elegance post-facelift. The Elegance had your proposed wheel and tyre combo as standard, and is the fastest and most stable car down a twisty road that I've ever owned. So I'd say it's a good choice although I've never used Nokian tyres.
