2001 tdi diesel pump knackered

Featured Replies

Greetings all, need some advice, I've got a 2001 octi tdi estate, the diesel pumps had it, been tested and basically its just worn out, done 137000, no lights on just on its way out, after getting it tested its in need of a total refurb, have been quoted £700 + vat + fitting. so I'm looking at having to fork more than its worth to fix it. In every other regard its a good car so I'd like to keep her going if I can. Thinking about buying a second hand/recon pump, any advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers

Secondhand Tandem pumps are £60-£100 on eBay . New ones are £320+vat from TPS...

Try a used one first, very easy to fit too.

Just be sure to use new gaskets from the pump to the cylinder head. £4 ish.

£700 is a bit steep really.

It doesn't have a tandem pump. It has a rotary distributor pump driven by the cambelt.

If you buy a second hand one you need to make sure the basic settings are correct - i.e. the pulley hasn't been removed or moved significantly on the shaft, or you need a specialist to sort it.

Good point about the pulley.

You will need to set the timing - even if you can get the rig pin inserted and the locking bar in place

Ahh my bad. It's old tdi, wow yeah that shouldn't have gone already !

Actually I don't recall anyone on here with a failed injection pump.  The pressure relief valve inside them comes apart but that's the only issue I can think of.

If you talk to TPS it's a common fault on 1.9 and 2.0 tdi units .

That's why they keep them in stock, slow moving items are special order .

2.0 injection pump diesel? 1.9 & 2.5 V6 yes, but a 2 litre. Are you talking about PD engines?

It's not a common fault and it is unusual for one to fail at that low mileage. TPS will sell them on a regular basis because there are so many cars with this pump still running.

What was the fault that caused you to have the pump tested?

If you take one to a diesel injection 'specialist' they ALWAYS need a rebuild/refurb :(

Yes pd's as per my first post , this post is for a non pd issue so why don't rwbaldwin and trundlenut help shropie out and get this post back on topic ?

You're talking nonsense. There are no 2001 PDs. The Octavia didn't see a PD until the ASZ became available in 2003.

I have a Fabia on a 2000 x reg PD , I assumed the issue was with a pd , as i said before "Ahh my bad. It's old tdi, wow yeah that shouldn't have gone already !"

I can only assume your having a bad day or your suffering from some sort of small man syndrome.

As i said before why don't you get this topic back on track and help shropie out instead of posting usles comments

Hi all, cheers for the responses, the original problem was lack of pick up, gutless under load until it got to about 2200rpm then a surge of power, also pump had become very noisy, diagnostics said fuel pump but no light on, changed the engine temp sensor as i knew that was faulty and had heard that it could throw up fuel pump codes, also changed the egr solenoid as the egr pipe was solid with carbon. It would run a little better but not much. Pump now off the car and sent to 'specialist' and have been told it will need a total rebuild

Good luck, hope you get it sorted .

What's the background with the car, 137K is low mileage for a diesel of this age, known genuine?

What fuel has it been run on, pump diesel, veg oil, recycled veg, heating oil etc?

What exactly was the fault code?

Not surprising you didn't have a light on, there are a lot of faults which don't trigger it (such as turbo overboost) but then a faulty brake light will.

Did you get it checked with VCDS, proper dealer tool or some sort of generic odb2 scanner?

Seeing as the pump is off the car I would consider changing the timing belt and water pump unless it has been done recently.

Yep genuine mileage, full service history, been really well looked after, running regular pump diesel, definitely gonna do water pump and t belt, just trying to get the exact fault code from my mechanic I believe he uses a proper scanner, costs him a fortune to update it. getting the pump back monday will check out the pressure relief valve as suggested in earlier post

What was the outcome in the end?
