Complete novice here. Being screwed over. Again.

Hi, you were all very helpful last time (I had a problem with my central locking. The car dealer and his eejit mechanic telling me it was normal, I knew it wasnt posted here, got proof they fixed it) so I wondered if you would be kind enough to help me again.

Basically, since I bought my Skoda its driven faultlessly, it feels perfect, absolutely love it. Except I have a couple of lights that have come on intermittently while the engine is one (EPC and one thats shaped like a tap). My mechanic tells me I cant do diddly squat until the lights stay on constantly. The last two times they did, I took it to him, he took it to his mechanic, he switched the lights off and that was it.

They havent been on for a while.

However, when I switch on my car (the first click, so not the engine) all the lights come on, then one by one go out. Except for the EPC light and the tap one.

So I have two questions.

When you turn on your Fabia but not th engine, do ALL the lights come on them go out one by one? Or do some lights stay on?

If they stay on does that mean its no problem if they disappear when the engine is on?

When you turn the car on but not the engine do all the lights come on by go one by ome except the batter light? Is it normal for the battery light to stay on until the engine os fired up?

Thanks.

(Appologies, I really am a novice)

The tap one is going to be oil i think

And if thats flashing you either have low oil level or low oil pressure, both are very serious and may kill your engine if not rectified shortly

Its not the oil tap its different.

No lights are flashing.

You have a manual in the car?

Have a browse through that and find out what the symbol is?

Maybe coolant?

If so and your not loosing coolant possibly a corroded header tank level sensor?

What year/engine is it?

Yep the tap sounds like the coolant expansion tank sensor - common problem, I had it

Fixed fairly easily by someone mechanically competent, part costs £12 odd (new expansion tank header)

If its warranty tell them to stop feeding you the bull and check out the expansion tank and fix it, its a common problem as people on here have told you ok ?

The other light MIGHT be another common problem which is the short load wire on the alternator (which can be fixed by extending the wire)

Both are fairly inexpensively fixed if they fit in with these common issues

Oh PS its normal for the lights that light up to do so, then extinguish. Its a way of telling the warning lights are working so that is ok.

Oh and ideally you want someone on here with a vagcom to read to double check this out, it would confirm the above. I'd offer but too far away, dunno if anyone else can help, I think in the diagnostics part of forums may be a vagcom owners register you may be able to check if someone nearby can help ?

I've had the washer fluid low level and the control system for exhaust lights described as a tap. The latter usually comes on with EPC

The tap shaped thing was Electronic Engine Management.

I cant figure out if anyones answered my main question so Im going to give it another shot.

When I turn the ignition on to the first click (before fully turning on the engine) all the lights come on, then go out one by one. *except* the EPC, Electronic Engine Management and the battery light.

Do all Skoda fabias do that?

Its a 2003, 1.4 engine.

Runs like an absolute dream.

As far as I'm aware all the lights should come on and go off. Chance the mechanic could have taken the bulb out?

Sarah is saying that the EPC & Battery Light are NOT switching off, they are staying illuminated.

Ok I think Im explaining myself badly.

When I turn the car on but NOT the engine, all the lights come on and go out one by one except the EPC the Electric Engine Management and battery light. They stay on.

When I turn the engine fully on they all disappear.

However, they do come up with the engine on but intermittently

My question is this - "If you turned your skoda on one click (NOT the engine) and all the lights come on, when they go out one by one do ANY lights stay on?"

Oh, I've got a diesel but a few lights stay on before starting, pretty sure a battery light is one of them.

Thanks Matt, out of interest which ones stay on?

I'll check in 5 min when I take the Mrs to work . . .

mines a vrs but battery and eml stay on until engine is started then disappear .... the fack they are flashing i wouldve thought there is a fault but a scan should show these up as fault codes are stored until manually erased

Its any lights that are remaining ON (after starting) you should be worried about...and I would imagine that as long as all the lights come on temporarily before starting to confirm no bulb failures I would be more concerned with the first point

Our '05 1.2 has four lights on in the circumstances you describe: handbrake warning, EPC, battery light and the 'picture of an engine' one, which I think is emissions.

Don't think it has any faults, definitely none still lit when engine running, but I'll scan it in a bit to check. (Yep, no engine fault codes on Gendan VC210 scan tool.)

Ok when you put the key in the ignition and turn it to the position before starting the engine all the warning lights should light up. Then all but ABS and Engine Management Light should go out, on starting the engine all warning lights should go out. If you have a warning light coming on whilst driving even intermittent then you need to get the car put on Vag Com to read any possible error codes. Once you have the codes go back to the garage with the facts. You can buy a cable from  http://www.gendan.co...uct_VAGUSB.html and download vcds lite for free from ross tech website and you will need a laptop the support from gendan over the phone is first class and will talk you through setting it up to use if your a novice. Hope that clears it up for you.
