Used OEM alloys or new aftermarket alloys for Winter wheels?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

As the title states, what are peoples opinions on the best way to go for winter alloys? Having looked on eBay at how much used alloys are going for & adding in the potential cost of getting them refurbished, it looks possible to be able to get a set of aftermarket alloys (Wolfrace etc) for a similar overall cost. Which would people consider the best option?

I'm only asking as it looks like my current winter wheels (16's) are not going to fit my new VRs estate!!

Looking forward to the replies & thanks!!

Mmm I have a octi elegance combi on order ,looking into wheels am I wrong to say that If i have 18inch on car in summer, can i have 17" instead or even 16" mind you it look silly then ?

I think I'm going for 17" alloys the cheapest ones I can find anyone know of cheap deal on wheels ?

As for tyres you get what you pay for on winter tyres?is it better to buy now as summer ?

Sorry about the 20 questions lol

im pretty sure its only the vrs that needs 17s due to the front disc size. The elegance should be fine on 16s.

btw I now have a set of steel wheels (16s)and winter rubber for sale! ! sob!

I have all ready picked mine.....thought of refurb but decided on these............

Let me know if you're selling your 16's as I pick up my 2.0 TDi on Sunday and am only 5 miles from Carterton!

16" will fit on a MkII FL vRS.  My spare is a 205/55-16 and it fits on the front.

this is the mkiii section though ;)

TBH, Since winter wheels are more likely to be kerbed / have gritter damage / etc - I wouldnt even bother getting a set refurbed.

They would be on around 2-3mths a year, and you will be too busy ploughing through snow to notice ;)

I've got myself a set of used Zenith 17" alloys for this very purpose. I'm going to leave them in current condition for winter use. A little bit of kerb damage. May get them refurbished in the future may not. Depends what they look like after SWMBO has been driving around in them.
