It's not the best when you come home and SWMBO says

"did you see the bump on the car?"

Her car got hit in a local carpark. Fair play to the guy (a German Tourist) he waited around till she got back to the car and by then had written out all of his details and his insurance details.

The back corner of the car has been caved in, including one of the parking sensors (dunno if it's still working), with a broken reflector and some scratches.

I had to feel sorry for my wife, having to spell out all the German details to the insurance bod on the other end of the phone ("can your computer do umlauts ? the 2 little dots ?")

But no wonder insurance premiums are on the up. Because it's not her fault, the insurance will claim back from "Deutsche Allgemeine Versicherung AG"  the cost of  a hire car of a similar size during the repair, (rather than the "free" courtesy car of who-knows-what size from the repair company) AND a replacement child seat, seeing as there was one in the car at the time of the collision.

Unless driving over 6 mph car seat doesn't need replacing.

My VRS has one 'car park' ding. Feckin SWMBO did it in the drive.

A slight over-exageration? "The back corner of the car has been caved in"

The rear corner of the bumper has been folded inwards, and will probably pop out with a bit of heat and pressure to the inside, then the parking sensor will need to be repositioned, possibly the reflector replaced and the scratches repainted.

The child seat will certainly not need replacing!! That comes across as a huge try-on.

My wife did say we didn't need another seat, the bod on the phone insisted.

mind you, the bod on the phone did say "it wasn't your fault, so enterprise will give you an equivalent car while yours gets repaired"

Enterprise then turned around and said "until the other person's insurance confirms it was his fault, you're getting a Peugeot 107" - and seeing as the other guy is here on holiday, goodness knows if he's told his insurance yet.

given that SWMBO will need a big enough car for carting the kids around, guess what I'll have the pleasure of driving to work, while she gets my vRS.

we've no idea how fast the other person was going, can't have been more than 10 mph, but the seat was not damaged and has been used since, so we have decided that unless the insurance insist on seeing either the receipt for the current seat, and/or a receipt for a replacement, we're not going to bother sending them one.

Yesterday being a bank holiday, today's the day the car gets taken for fixing, and we find out exactly what we'll be driving in the meantime.
