Brake light not working? Bulb and fuses are fine

Featured Replies

As above, my rear offside brake is intermittently not working.

Bulb is fine (replaced anyway), I've checked every light relating fuse, all ok.

Anyone recommend what's next to check?

I don't know if it's related, but my offside dipped beam is intermittent also.

I have factory fit xenons, it just switches off. I haven't had time to inspect this yet (ballast etc). But it doesn't struggle to start like previous problematic ballasts I've had on previous cars. Fires up every time, just turns off every now and then.

It seems only to happen during town driving, not motorway. (Perhaps when I'm using the brake most?). The more I type this the more I suspect they're related.

Help much appreciated.

Thanks

Dodgy brake switch? Although that typically results in the brake lights staying on.

Brake switch won't effect one bulb. You changed the right bulb? I'd suspect the holder if all correct.

Thanks for confirming Ross :)

Yeh I changed the bulb.

Is there a way of checking the holder without getting a new one?

multimeter .... press brake pedal while someone checks to see how much current is there ... no current ... probs wiring fault ....... 12v ish... then the bulb isnt making correct contact within the holder

Did you put the right single filament bulb in?

Swap over the left and right bulb holders. If the problem moves to the other side its the holder if not its the wiring

Yep, school boy error by me! It was the wrong bulb.

All working now.

Now to check that ballast.....

You would be surprised just how many times I used to see that.

It doesn't help that if you go into halfords they list the wrong tail light bulb for the Fabia. They have it as a twin filament bulb

The tail light bulb is a twin filament.

Brake light bulb is a single.

I'm going to sound like a complete numpty here, but when I put on my brakes, it's the rear tail light bulb that shines brighter...a twin filament. Which is the single filament brake light bulb?

I got pulled over for a broken brake light...took it out to find it's definitely twin filaments, which looked fine. Swapped them around...it's the bulb and not the holder, so I'm off to replace that. (it's the bottom bulb on both clusters).

On another note, when I put the rear fogs on, only the offside comes on (top bulb on cluster). Swapped the bulbs to no avail. The multimeter is reading 11V on the offside, but only 5V on the nearside. Filaments look fine. Faulty nearside holder?

There is only one rear Fog Lamp on the drivers side, if you need both you have to run a link wire from the drivers to passenger side.

Uhoh....so what is the bulb on the top of the cluster on the nearside?

Is that the brake light? If so, then when the brakes are depressed, not only do the taillights come on (or brighten if dipped beams are on) and the top rear bar but that top bulb on nearside cluster too?
