Make sure you have a spare!

Featured Replies

There i was, 75mph, lane one of the M6 southbound when i caught a glimpse of what i thought was a small plastic bag. By the time i was upon it, i had a car up my chuff and someone else to my right in lane two so i had no choice but to ride it out. Ouch, cue the big bang and feelings of total destruction. Turned out to be a large rock or piece of concrete slab. I got Immediate deflation of the front nearside tyre, so i slowed to the hard shoulder. (Suprised that i got no TPM alert?) Not the end of the world however i took a look at my almost new conti 5 to find a big hole in the sidewall! Now i know for sure that the VAG supplied spray foam gunk thing is not going to fix this- and five minutes later i confirmed i was right.    The whole situation would not have been so bad if it was just me, but i was with my wife, three year old boy, 11month old girl and the dog was in the boot. It was a Sunday so we had to wait almsost two hours for a flat bed to recover us to a tyre place in Kendal. In total, four hour delay, but im kicking myself because i know i can change a wheel in 15 minutes.

In short, if you have the spray foam/gunk, get rid ASAP and get a proper spare. I have learnt the hard way! Talking to the RAC recovery guy, he said it only fixes 9 out of 10 flat tyres in any case.

Ive decided to buy a full size Thermisto alloy with new conti, ive read it will fit in the recess just fine as the actual size is the same as the 16 inch steel with larger tyre.

All the bestNeil.

  • For those who are interested the 80 Km/hr speed rating is due to regulations not handling. The 16" narrower wheel had a higher profile on the tyre sidewall and should match (or be very close) to the

I think the RAC guy is an optimist...

So glad mine came with full size unused spare and jack kit - perhaps one of the benefits of buying a 10 month old car that came straight from Skoda UK......

Yesterday I also destroyed a tyre on my MkII Fl vRS Octavia.  Also no TPM alert despite having to drive 1/4 mile to find a safe place to stop by which time the tyre was absolutely flat!  Fortunately when I bought the car I negotiated for a spare wheel, jack, etc. to be in the boot.  So I had a steel wheel with 205/55-16 tyre to fit as a temporary message.  After driving 1/2 mile with the spare fitted the TPM then gave its first warning and message display - what a useless system.  I have no confidence that the TPM would actually warn me of a slight lose of pressure in a tyre.  The tyre (6mm tread remaining) was un-repairable so had to buy a new 225/40-18 Conti Sport Contact 2.

Obviously none of you understand the purpose of the Tyre Pressure Monitoring system (according to some on these forums). When I questioned its function after it failed to light up for me after a similar incident, I was told in another thread that it wouldn't always record the pressure change, unless you checked your tyre pressures on a regular basis! So obviously yet again in these instances it's not the system that's at fault, it's your expectations!

What size spare do I need for an elegance model? there are some on ebay are they all the same size?

I have a 2011 Elegance with the factory fitted spare wheel and it is a 205/55/16 on a steel rim. Hope this helps.

First thing I put on the list on ordering the Superb. £85 well spent in my book.

Ditto Svend with steel option but managed to upgrade last week with a £16 steal off eBay of a Themisto with (just legal) tyre.

I've got a better tyre (4mm) in garage waiting to fit when I get round to it.

It's a deffo must have either the standard 16" steel spare or 18" Themisto if you can get one cheap enough especially if towing here or abroad.

When we got our Superb estate a few weeks ago, first thing I did was to check the spare wheel well. There it was, full size steel spare and jack kit.

Recently bought a Skoda approved Superb,no spare, surprised previous owner had driven 42000 miles without one, £ 155 for wheel and kit, I  am the owner of 2 excellent VAG inflators as this is the second time I have ordered a spare wheel on 2 pre owned Skodas

Can you fit a spare in the Greenline estate?

I have been building my own and there is no option to add the wheel probably due to the emmissions and weight for the greenline.

Brilliant, many thanks.

Just curious as to why people are paying over £100 for the full size spare wheel and kit, when I paid £85 for ours new from the dealer?

Edit: Just read 'Octygone's post, dealers cashing in I guess.

just paid £155  which I stated in a earlier post, no problem repeating myself. maybe a problem paying £ 155 though.

Mine has the 18 inch L & K alloys but the spare is a steel 16, I assume due to the size of the well

I have the steel space saver, plus I carry a compressor and can of Slime tyre sealant for when it's dark, raining, or a flat in a dangerous place.

Second I was ordering mine, FULL size spare, none of that little space saver rubbish, a 16 " spare and used It once so fat

What did you get and did you order it when you ordered the car? or did you order it after you took delivery.

...Immediate deflation of the front nearside tyre, ...(Suprised that i got no TPM alert?)

Takes around 500m at least for it to figure it out.  It's more a system for detecting slow leaks.  It works by sensing a difference in rotational speeds between a full tyre and a flat one as a flat one has a smaller diameter and therefore rotates faster.

To add to the confusing mix on spares, my Combi has a full size (well a 205R16) tyre but they put a "no faster than 80km/hr" sticker on it.  Must be an arse covering exercise as the diameter is the same as the standard 17 alloys on my car.

I suspect the 80km/hr speed rating is due to the difference in width rather than diameter i.e. 205 v 225. Once you have one tyre with a different size then handling could be unpredictable

TPM is for slow leaks, not rapid deflation as with a blow out as you know what's happening immediately so don't need an obvious warning.

I forget the distance/time, but it's when the system detects a 3psi or higher loss of pressure.

But as above you need to regularly check pressures rather than waiting for the TPM as the Mrs thinks. Last time as a passenger I said they felt low, and got the "lower profile than yours, sports suspension blah". Checked at the garage and tyres ranged from 1-6psi lower than they should be.

"Wow that feels so much better " she said.

I think the difference in price is that it is £85 when you spec a new car but a lot more if the car is not new

Got the 16" steel wheel with kit. Had to order it after the car arrived at the dealer along with the mats and umbrella (base model didn't come with one). Don't know why they did it like that. But it was all money well spent.

I recall it being £85 for the wheel and kit when ordering in march/april as a set price. Saw them on eBay (which I thought would be cheaper) at £95+postage. So double checked the price at dealer and thought, great. But now even eBay is showing them at £145ish mark for the wheel and kit, or £90 for wheel alone and kits for £30 mark.
