vRS Pickup - What Should I Look For?

Featured Replies

Picking up my 11 month old vRS tomorrow from the dealer and just wondered what I should be looking for in/on the car and any relevant questions I should ask. I'll be checking the paintwork and alloys and also the oil level. After reading the forum I'll also be asking for a demonstration on how to open the fuel cap without looking like an idiot! There'll probably only be enough fuel in it to get me to the nearest garage.

Check:

all the documents are there including a fully stamped service book

spare key and it works for remote locking and starting the car

spare wheel is it there and do you have a jack, wheel brace and the plastic tweezers to pull the bolt covers off plus a tow eye

If you want the doors to lock on moving off has it been set for auto lock/unlock by the workshop techs

all wiper blades are in good condition

brake discs are free from corrosion and do not show signs of sticking

might want to check tyre pressures too, often find dealers over inflate tyres and check they are not wearing unevenly

check underneath for damage, particularly round the jacking points and rear torsion beam

dampness under any floor mats (sign of a leak, washer system or rain getting in)

mention oil but also coolant and brake fluid etc.

Skoda badges on the boot, bonnet and wheels for going white; warranty item

oh and the lights all work

Sorry, as above.

(never showed on my phone)

Ask if it needs  super unleaded petrol or if its OK on regular Unleaded.

Just to see what they say.

(best to run Super Unleaded, but decide yourself.)

I take it that it will have had its 10,000/12 months service done and the Sevice Book written up if on Fixed Servicing,

or maybe not if on Variable servicing...

*Ask the Salesperson to show you how to check on the dash.*

Ask the Salesperson how you check the oil, and get them to show you.

**It is not done cold,** You should be told this!

but you can dip it cold, and check to see where the oil sits now before it leaves the dealership.

*Fuel cap is simple, Hold the cap, put the key in, turn key anti-clockwise if it is locked, remove key,

wind cap anti-clockwise and open.*

Then screw back on, and lock.

(For checking oil when hot,  best read how to check in the Owners hand book,  or we can tell you.

i am interested to know if the Salesperson know and tells you.)

Tyre Pressures,

Check the Pressure Recommendation in the Fuel Filler cap.

Then go and set your tyre pressures, see what they are sitting at,

Doing this will let you know how the Dealership did checks before selling the car.

If there are 4 different tyre pressures please be sure to tell them.

Then Re-set the TPMS. (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.)

Spare Wheel.

Check in the boot and see the spare is there,

& the jack, Locking Wheel nut socket, tweezer for removing wheel nut cover, and Wheel Brace.

Check what connection you are getting for Media, if still with the car.

Then enjoy.

Sorry I read the thread title literally, as being a vRS Pick Up!! :giggle:

Good luck with your new purchase & hope you enjoy ;)

Re Corrosion on the discs.

Almost new Demonstrators can be red with rust from sitting on the Forecourt.

Or low mileage used cars.

If there is rust on the braking surface or worst, pitting, scoring or marking,

i would ask them to get the car back through the workshop.

Get them to clean them up.

They may Skim the Discs, but it is unlikely they will replace them.

Is it an Approved Used Skoda Vehicle you are buying?

As if there is a Check list of items checked, and service done before collection,

if no Oil and Filter change was done.

Are they offering an Extended Warranty now at extra cost, over the 25 months still on it?

***But check incase the car has a 5 year warranty  now from the first buyer. buying 2 years extra, Which would be nice!***

Ask if the car has already had any Warranty Work done on it.

george.

MDI cable, if not mentioned above. Discs can build up a surface coating of rust quite quickly, listen to the sound and feel when braking if it is rough then speak to them about it otherwise probably normal wear and tear.

Enjoy the bank holiday hopefully not stuck in traffic.

Picked it up this morning and took my checklist along!  The guy told me that I have to check the oil when it's cold, he showed me and it was all within the hatch area.

There was no MDI cable which was annoying as I just plug my usb drives in and listen to stuff, they are going to get me one though.

When I got home the DRL's weren't switched on so I turned them on and noticed that the drivers side glass was cracked in half, sods law that I didn't check that in the showroom!  Rang them and they are going to fix it so another 35 mile round trip.

Apart from that everything else was ok.  It's very nippy and it's going to take a couple of days before I stop moving my left arm and leg!

See page 168 of the Owners Manual.

It says check 'warm', in VW books it says "must be at 'operating temperature'."

1.2 ltr/44kw engines are checked when 'Cold'.

Sorry but you need to check your Oil Level. sooner rather than later.

Do the correct hot dip.

(and maybe do the Jabozuma Cold Dip, to see if that matches the hot dip.

I can explain if you have not read.)

Stone Cold Engine, start the car nd stop right away, then go check the dipstick reading)

Some here might say that a cold dip on the Cross Hatched area is OK.

If Stone Cold and the car has not been started,

your car will have surely before you went to collect it though.)

I say that it should be higher than the Cross Hatch when stone cold & with 3.6 litres of oil.

At least at the top of the cross hatch..

Yours might need Oil.

When did it get an Oil Change or is it on Variable Servicing?

I thought of this when I read vrs pickup... :-)

First day in work after the long weekend so first proper drive. It's only about 8 miles to work and it's mostly country lanes so not many places to get speed up. Car feels nice to drive and nowhere near as big as my civic was on the lanes! Still got my left foot and left hand going to the imaginary clutch/gear stick but I'm sure that will go with time. One thing I think's going to be a pain is the volume on the steering wheel. I've caught it 3 times already turning the wheel and pumping up the CD to about 150 db!

I thought of this when I read vrs pickup... :-)

Believe me that's no vRS with 75 horses under the bonnet from production! :giggle:  ;)
