URGENT HELP REQUIRED RE: COILOVERS

Featured Replies

so the rears are on fine, however the fronts ive had a mare, the original drop link bolts have snapped and one is stuck in the anti roll bar. I literally have no idea or the tools to get it out.

Anyone remotely local to me and wise enough to come down and help finish the coilies with me, tomorrow or tuesday morning. The car is on stands at the moment and going nowhere :(

Im in camberley surrey, gu15 1as and can offer financial reward

Thanks in advance

Chris

Can you post a pic of what's stuck in the arb? If it's what I think you've done can you not grip one side with mole grips and undo the nut to get it out?

As above if its the ball that has come out of the drop link either mile grips - if it turns in them file down two sides - square it off a little and then try again

Get them cut off and buy some new ones.

You can still drive the car with the anti roll bar disconnected.

Its the bolt on the arb itself which has the torx bit in the thread and a 16mm bolt around it

Ill get a pic up

You mean the drop link.

The arb is, the bar.

That picture is of the ARB.

I'm unclear as to how the OP has ended up in this situation, did you hacksaw the ball off the bolt instead of cutting the nut off?

G clamp one side have a socket big enough for the thread to go into other side have a drill bit pushing it into the socket

Yeh the torx bit shattered under very little load so I hacked off the droplin as I have new ones to go on. And then I cut the droplink to fet clearance. Bit of a n00b error

Did you get the nut turning at all before you shattered your torx bit? You generally need to wire brush the threads and apply penetrant BEFORE attempting to undo the nut.

You may have entered the angle-grinder zone, it's a manly rite of passage, try not to set light to anything and wear safety specs and a nice hat if you have any hair you care about.

Another one to say mole grips.

I clean the threads with an electric wire brush, put some wd40 on, mole grips on the ball end and then put the spanner on.

I've changed loads and never had any problems, the odd time I put heat on from my tiny snap on heat torch but that's it. Never cut any off.

Look at the picture; the OP's already cut it off, are you actually paying any attention here?

Heat and two pair of mole grips then

Would I be able to angle grind the back off and hammer the bolt and remaining thread through?

Looking at that photo. . Cant you just knock it out?. . .if youve cut the ball end off it should do. . Unless theres a lip bigger than the hole?

Just angle grinder it flush with the arb and knock it out with the nut still attatched to the other side.

I take the arb hole isnt threaded at all?

Would I be able to angle grind the back off and hammer the bolt and remaining thread through?

Yes, just like I said.

No, I wouldn't have said what I said if it were.

I take it you're a bit new at all this, let's stop playing guessing games shall we, you really shouldn't be attempting this kind of work with such rudimentary knowledge and mechanics 101 is a little outside the scope of this specialist forum. May I suggest you get a mate who knows what he's doing to give you a hand?

Ok ive done coilovers befote ans never has it been as much hassle with this car, mk2 3 golfs, corrados, alfas, theyre easy. I read up on how to do this and its just gone a bit Pete tong.

Handbag throwing with a touch of condescension is a bit much when im after support. Anything could go wrong with anything. Its just how my lucks been recently

But thank you none the less

Cars go wrong even for the most experienced mechanic, I'm not a brilliant mechanic but I get myself into these kind of situations also from time to time my opinion I would try to knock it through as it is but don't smash it cos you may bend the arb if it don't go cut the same side you have all ready cut so it is flush with the arb again try not to damage the arb then knock it through hopefully that will work

Right usually, which is why I get exasperated.

I wasn't actually irritated by the OP, it was the "mole grip" chorus after I'd clearly told the OP he needed an angle grinder.

All's well that ends well.

Tell us a happy story tomorrow please CWizzle.
