Highway Maintenance

Featured Replies

We see this frequently on, well highway maintenance lorrys.

But also still on many old ex maintenance lorry and trucks uses by gardeners, landscapers and general odds and sods.

Soo.......does the term "Highway Maintenance " have any official bearing or can anybody stick on their truck?

Anyone can and does display them.

Some Police officers when stopping said vehicle might ask why they have them on,

4x4's , Private & Hire cars, vans etc.

Then ask the driver if they have the correct Business Insurance that covers them driving for commercial reasons.

From what I see it's a contradiction. They don't maintain squat round here

Many do maintain something,

a Travellers Lifestyle of Freedom to roam the country far and wide,

knocking doors and saying they have Materials left from a Job in the area and would you like your driveway done.

Then you get done when the job is started, the breaking up of the surface and cash to buy materials is asked for.

Used to get these scum regularly when we had the farm.

I don't know about the rules for putting the text on the vehicles.

But anyone who undertakes works on the highway must have a works permit from the highway authority.

Likewise they are only allowed to park on the highway in such a way that contravenes usual parking restrictions or blocks traffic lanes if this is specified in the works permit.

That seems to have little to do with the vehicles you end up behind and might assume they actually have something to do with the Road Working going on.

You follow them as they slow down and you expect them to be turning into the Works Access possibly on the Closed Carriageway, or the likes.

Most often they will be.

But many of the ones i see look like they are 'On the Rob'.

Someone some place is responsible for Stealing Cable, nicking materials and Plant.

Maybe time there was more of a 'Clamp Down' on the dodgy Geezers.

Easy enough for 'Stops to be put in on' the Random amount of 'Crap Vehicles' running around displaying 'Motorway Maintenance' signs.

If the Police bothered to look at the ones Parked up at the illegal encampment, at Aberdeen Beach Boulevard' & else where,

& these are Brand New Vehicles displaying the signs.

Not much 'Motorway or other road maintenance' being done by those tin tent dwellers.

Not many 'Permits' being issued or 'Official road works' going on out of there.

Maybe the odd dropped kerb gets done.

AIUI, an HM/MM warning sign should only be displayed by vehicles belonging to a firm with an active trunk/special road maintenance contract. I suspect that enforcement of this law makes enforecement of "using a hand-held mobile whilst driving" look Draconian!
