Acceptable turbo shaft play

Featured Replies

I'm collecting a garrett pd130 turbo tomorrow to keep as a spare for when my KKK inevitably blows.

How much (if any) shaft play is acceptable?

Anything else I can check?

Cheers

Everyone has their own acceptable limits. Bearing in mind a turbo with no oil versus one with oil will alter the play. Cant the garretts be rebuilt quite cheaply?

I believe so. They're also supposedly stronger from what I can gather. I know alot of companies will only take a Garrett in exchange and won't touch a KKK.

There should be no detectable shaft play at all, any detectable play means the seals will be damaged and the unit should be completely overhauled.

That's great then. Gives me something to check, thanks.

As long as the play in the shaft doesn't let the blades touch the side of the turbo, obviously no play would be the best, but if you can see marks on the wall of the turbo where the blades have been catching then don't get it
