Auto Transmission having a mind of its own

Featured Replies

hello,

I've got an Octavia 1u 2002 with 1.6 automatic. The automatic transmission is a bit strange. Sometimes, especially when pushed a bit hard, the transmission tends to suddenly change down so the engine revs like crazy for 1-2 seconds. It doesn't happen often and it doesnt really bother me. I thing it only happens on the freeway, so its only going down from 4th to 3rd. However  lately its been happening more often. After my vacation the car was parked for 2 weeks. Then when driving back home from the airport it suddenly went to 3rd and wouldn't go to 4th until after 5-10 minutes. The oil was changed on the transmission within 5000-10000km ago. I've heard someone at the dealership saying it might not have the exactly the correct oil level.

I think your first port of call will be to have a diagnostic scan. The auto box will have it's own ECU and may have a couple of fault codes.

I'm thinking oil level or grade (Oils should always match the relevant or later VAG specification) or possibly a mis-set kickdown switch.

When they changed the oil did they use vag com to the check the oil temp when filling the Box as it is critical that the level is checked at a set temp. The oil used is also very important must be the correct spec and did they replace the filter in the box?

I'm thinking of getting my auto box oil changed soon and hope it doesn't do more damage than good. Specialist in Cannock quoted 119 pounds with filter change also.
