Hub falling off / bearing coming out?

Featured Replies

Wasn't going to make a thread but might have came up before.

Bank holiday Monday after abit of spirited driving I had a constant grinding noise on the passenger side front wheel. On closer inspection I noticed the brake disc was touching the caliper carrier.

I removed most the parts so was just left with the hub/bearing and I could see the bearing had started to come out Aprox 10mm which is worrying...

Is there no circlip holding these bearings in place?

I noticed a jagged type metal ring all the way round where the bearing sits but was cracked and not attached to anything.

Supposed to be... ISTR - Pressed into hub with a circlip to retain.

I don't remember removing a circlip when pressing out the old bearing and didnt get one with the new bearing either...

There is a special to the press bearing in to the carrier, with out this tool you will not the the bearing fully into place.

This was mine, had to take it to a VAG specialist the have it pressed in, this also caused damage to the ABS sensor.

Probably not the answer you were hoping for?

If you go to laser tools website and search for 5576 you will see the special tool. There is also a video of it in action

I would advise against using the laser tool, it is of very poor quality. I had to return mine and purchase a Sykes-Pickavant kit to finish the job.

However, you do have to use correct tool to use it. Using a press won't do the job correctly as it could damage the bearing. The only thing to hold the bearing in place is the locking ring on the back of the bearing. Incorrect fitting of the bearing can damage the locking ring.

Thanks for the replies.

I knocked it back In using a large socket and big mash hammer (not recommended I know) but it did the job for now.

I also used a 7" pry bar to use the slight angle down the back of the hub to press the locking ring in place which appears to have worked.

I'll keep an eye on it and replace it properly if its needed, it isn't exactly somthing I want coming off!!

If I were you, i'd get it replaced as soon as. Go to a specialist who have the correct tooling. You need the special locking collar to press the locking ring and bearing in properly.
