tunning box or remap?

Featured Replies

what are the diffrences? what are the benifits? ive a 105bhp 4x4 octavia is it worth doing?

Tuning boxes intercepts signals from the ecu and increases fuel across the rev range. They don't request more boost but as a result of more fuel and no n75 map tweaking results in an increase in boost pressure.

With a remap you can tweak fueling at set rpm points, alter boost, timings, smoke maps, accelerator pedal maps, fuel temp maps.

Some tuning boxes do actually alter boost.

I was considering a box for the Furby VRS Mk1 until my good friend a Skoda technichian who stated the following.

"For £80ish you could end up with over £4k of damage!" To which I was gobsmacked (to say the least)!!!!

They and other tech's across the UK have had PD and CR engines in recently after these boxes have been fitted causing non starts, misfires and cutouts. All with the owners stating "I've not done anything new to it, honest."

What happens is the injectors or PD injectors get over fulled causing all manner of problems. And especially on the PD enigine as the injectorn is a mini fuel pump (I got lost at this point) they push nearly £800 plus VAT to replace including labor. Can also cause ignition issues in the cobustion chamber.

I shared this info in a previous forum

So is it safe to say a remap is better? what kind of increase would you get out of the pd 105bhp? and is it safe from the above, just bought the car but is kinda slow compared with my 130bhp passat,

That's because decent tuning boxes start at £200 upwards. An £80 box is always going to be a piece of rubbish.

A good box gives you most of what a remap offers, but usually at a cheaper price. A remap is the perfect solution, but if you only want 25hp or so a box will do the job very well.

True, these were discounted on a promo from £189.

Also if your spending that much on a plug n play why use bluefin, or a stage 1 remap?

A lot of crap regurgitated from other forums on tuning boxes on here. You always get what you pay for, cheap box or cheap remap expect problems.

I ran a box for 3 years on my 3.0 V6 diesel with no problems at all and put it on/off at servicing/MOT time with no problems, it also RR at an extra 45Bhp on its mid setting with no extra smoke.

Wow bit harsh, I have feelings (lol).

Not wanting to upset people only passing on what I was told.

I'm not an expert and do not claim to be, if I was I would be rich!!

I personally would always go for a proper remap. For the sake of a few quid more I'd get my car remaped by a reputable tuner like shark. For £300 they will remap your car and there are loads of people on this forum that will vouch for their work. You should get 145bhp out of your engine but I would double check with shark that it is the same map that they use for the 4x4 octy's.

Check insurance companies...seems like a great way to double your premuim

What a ridiculous uninformed comment it may add about 15%-20% to your premium if anything at all.

I've recently fitted a CRD-T box from DTUK. It has different maps that can be adjusted to suit. I've now found a setting I like and it's superb really. It's comparable to the remap I had on my old Leon PD 170 if not a little better.

Can't fault it so far.

Disadvantages over a remap.

Not quite as good perhaps?

Not tailored to your engine?

Advantages over a remap

Cheaper (but not a lot really)

Can be removed in 10 mins

Can be turned down or bypassed for winter (snow I'm thinking there)

Can be ebayed if you get rid of the car

Can be sent back and re programmed for a different car (free software. £50 wiring loom)
